Why is it such a big deal that the agents can clone themselves? Isn't it just like copying and pasting? And the twins look, to me at least, like they are a cut and paste agent. Why are these incredibly advanced machines just discovering how to do this? Tell me if I'm wrong, but it just seems kind of simple to me.

Well, they have rules and upto this time, they had the rule that they couldn't do that.

Note that they aren't just programs, they are self-aware intelligent beings. Isn't it the most annoying thing to see the poorest people have more and more kids? I think it would be along the same lines in AI-land. The more wasteful, resource hogging programs would reproduce and spread.

Who knows.

it may be that these machines are highly advanced but if you think about it in terms of accual people then you think i mean you can be the smrtest person in the world and have no common sence right. well isnt it possible that since these machines are so highly advaced that they have no common sence to copy and paste.

smith isnt just an agent though, hes more of a virus now. so he's duplicating himself with no intent anymore of keeping the matrix in-line, but with the full intent to kill neo at all costs..

sorry if that was kinda hard to understand
