The genius people that we have thinking up and passing our laws here in the grand state of Oklahoma have decided to make it even harder on parents and even easier on students (their kids) by passing a law that states...If your child is caught skipping school...the parents will be fined $250 for every day their child skips. Now would someone tell me just how this is going to benefit anyone? It puts more pressure on already stressed out parents such as single parents as well as parents in general. We get our kids up, make sure that they are fed, clothed, etc. then we either get them on the bus, take them ourselves, or they drive. Just how are we supposed to know if they are fucking skipping or not and how can we control that? We do have to do a little thing call work ya know....well at least the majority of us. Why should we the parents be fined? When do we teach our kids about the conciquences of their actions by making them be held accountable for them? FFS...
I know opinions will vary here like any other subject so discuss.

One has to wonder why this HASN'T made national news! The bastards!
Seriously though, it's up to the parents to stop being retarded and raise a child that won't be a juvenile delinquent. If a child is supposed to know where they are supposed to be for an entire day, then everything is hunky-dorey. It's these idiot parents that don't give a fuck about their kids that your lawmakers are challenging, because it is found that kids with parents who are "absent" tend to be more prone to delinquency. However, it is unfortunate to parents who believe they are doing a good job, but just have a child that's a fucking retard. Do I want to pay more money for car insurance for dumbass guys who like to crash cars or drive drunk? Not particularly, but I truly must if I would like to drive a motor vehicle.
I never ditched school, therefore I don't believe my mother or father would have had to worry about paying this fine.
Think of it this way: It's a wake-up call to all the people who shouldn't have kids. Maybe they'll get more involved, yes? Then if you know people who have this problem, you can honestly say your child is better than theirs. You don't even need a bumper sticker.

We've had this law for a while now, though our school has a pretty thorough system for catching kids who skip class. Attendance is taken at the beginning of each class, and if you're truant you get a phone call home and a mark on your report card. The fines don't actually come until like the 5th truancy, though, so if your kid's good and he's just the victim of circumstance, you shouldn't get fined. The deterrent for the children, I believe, is that it forces most parents to be responsible. I know if I received the fine, I'd give my kid a swift kick in the ass. Also, if you are completely oblivious to your child's delinquency and haven't figured it out through the phone calls or report cards, a bill should motivate you to straighten your kid out.

We didn't have fines for truancy, but we had a pretty thorough system for catching people out. Attendance at the start of the day, and then for each year level, someone would come around with a roll to each class, each period, and the teacher would write down who was missing. If that was my kind that got caught skipping, I'd make them pay it. Then kick their ass. Like NMN, I was never class skipper, unless I was pretty sick. So my folks would never have to worry.

Things at my school used to be pretty bad, so they cracked down on skippers a few years ago. Kids used to have their friends call in sick for them pretending to be their parents, and the office people knew it but didn't care. Now you have to have written confirmation from a parent and a doctor or whoever you're leaving school to see. And with truancy, every three class periods you missed you got a saturday school for, or ISS(in school suspension) if it was a repeat offense.

Must be easy to pass judgement.
The question here is whether a child at school that doesn't want to be there is actually spending its time efficiently. Are we taking children seriously if we believe in a 'one curriculum fits all'?
Also.. this belief that education cures crime and poverty is bull.. Kids in Africa are dying of thirst and hunger, and what do we do? We give them education so they can become doctors! Right.
Wake-up call!

It's damn easy. I do it all the time. Especially when I live in an area where it's blisteringly apparent.

No judgement calls are needed by anyone. This is simply a discussion which I invited all opinions and views. If I though NMN's or anyone else's opinion was uncalled for...I would blast them myself. I think that everyone here had something to say and I appreciate you all coming in here and giving me some feedback.
I think that we can all see that there are similar laws that have been passed in each part of the US as shown here. It isn't that I don't think something should be done about skipping school...it is just that I think there comes a point in time where the kids should be responsible for their own actions. Maybe then they would think twice about making a stupid mistake that COULD cost them dearly.
My daughter is not yet of age where this comes into play. She is only 6 at the moment so my reasons for posting this thread was to educate and get opinions on the subject...no more no less. I think that as parents yes...we have an obligation to teach our kids the basics such as right from wrong and try to instill good values in them. I can get my kid up as I stated before, get her to school, and then I have to go to work. Who is to say that the moment my car goes out of eye viewing she doesn't turn right around after hearing her friends yell to her and get into their car and speed off campus? Is that my fault that she chose to make that mistake? She is on school grounds by that time as well. Shouldn't the school take a bit of responsibility as well since we do pay our taxes and trust them on a daily basis with our kids? Why is it my fault if she makes that decision to do that and I am trying to earn a living for both of us but I have done all I could as in giving her the proper values and getting her to school. I think that if she makes that choice then she should be held accountable for it. I realize that she would not yet be 18 and in the eyes of the law I am responsible for her until such time but come on people...how are they suppose to learn if it is so damn easy for them to get away with it and they are told well...if you do it is your parents that will get in trouble for it..not you. Gee..that would make me not want to do it..especially if I had had an argument with my parents the night before or some shit like that. In my opinion...kids get away with too much shit now or days
