RIOTERS have been condemned for hijacking the Australian flag as a symbol of hate. Angry locals in troubled Cronulla – the scene of the worst riots where youths draped in flags attacked people of Middle Eastern appearance – have begun defiantly hanging Australian flags in windows and over balconies.

As 450 police patrolled Sydney streets last night to try to prevent a third night of violence, the RSL (Returned Servicemens League) accused mobs of abusing the flag.

"It's a symbol of our nation and it should be treated as our heritage," said New South Wales RSL president Don Rowe.

"We would hope it has not been used as a symbol of hate.

"The Australian flag represents everyone who lives in Australia no matter how they came here."

Mr Rowe said 100,000 Australians gave their lives in war under the Australian flag.

"That was defending our flag and it is a symbol of our tolerance of other people," he said.

In other developments:

MOBILE phone text messages calling for people to start their own race war surfaced in Melbourne and on the Gold Coast.

THE NSW Government began rushing through emergency laws to give police special powers to lock down trouble zones, search rioters, shut down pubs and confiscate vehicles.

THE Islamic Council of Victoria's office in West Melbourne was vandalised with a brick thrown through its front window.

SHOTS fired at teachers' cars after a school Christmas carols service were linked to the racial violence.

THE thugs behind Sunday's riot in Cronulla were released back on to the streets yesterday.

"We're dealing with an unprecedented situation the likes we haven't seen in Australia before,," NSW Assistant Police Commissioner Mark Goodwin said.

Sarah, 20, and Melanie, 22, despise the Lebanese Australian community and are happy to say so.

"This is our beach and we're here to claim it back," Melanie said.

"You can't go to the beach without the Lebs yelling stuff out.

"Because of that we've come here to take it back."

Both young women say they will answer a text-message call to rally at Cronulla on Sunday and intimidate any Australians of Lebanese descent who dare to show up.

"They're taking over our beach," Melanie said.

"They've got their own beach at Brighton, they can go back there.

"They took over La Perouse and now they've taken over Brighton."

Sarah said she believed she had the right to wave the Australian flag as a way of supporting Australian culture.

But the RSL is horrified the flag has been seized on by mobs involved in Sydney's race riots.

Across Cronulla angry locals are defiantly hanging flags in windows and over balconies.

NSW RSL president Don Rowe said he was also disgusted by reports that men of Lebanese descent had torn down and burnt a flag at Brighton-Le-Sands.

"That really disgusts us and it should be a criminal offence for anyone who desecrates the Australian flag," Mr Rowe said.

Youths were heading for Cronulla beach last night despite a heavy police presence to prevent a repeat of the violent scenes on Monday night, when carloads of Lebanese Australians ran amok, smashing windows and cars and beating passers-by.

Locals last night set up what they called "Leb Watch", a twist on the traditional Neighbourhood Watch concept.

Young men parked in vehicles along the main roads into Cronulla watching for men of Middle Eastern appearance and alerting others further down the road to be ready for them.

What I find most intreaguing about this situation is that if you skip back a generation or 2, all of 'white australia' are immigrants. Collective memories are rather short sometimes.

I'm not in Sydney NXM, i'm in another state. But there has been a bit of unrest in Melbourne, with texts going around trying to incite violence in come suburbs that have a large ethnic community. The town that I live in has one the largest ethnic communities in the country, with large Muslim, Iraqi and Turkish groups, and we're all just like "What a bunch of idiots". I think because in the major cities, everyone is just in each others pockets and its just so much easier for things to flare up. Plus, you just have fools who do this kind of shit for fun.

It's just all about tollerance, and when you think about it, every single person in the country is here because our elders came here from somewhere else. One photo I saw in the papers was a guy with "We grew here, you flew here". Maybe he conveneiently forgot that his Grandparents flew here too. Eeryone was a first generation Immigrant at one point or another.
