This was a thought I had the other day
If a person who is unplugged can go back into the matrix, that means that foreign code is being introduced. Therefore, can the zionites program their own weapons and use them in the matrix? I know there isnt any references in the movies, but whats your opinion? (I was thinking it would be cool for a gunsmith character to introduce Neo to some weapons he designed himself.)

opinions?

It certainly would be possible. The guns that they take in with them are a program that they wrote. However, there are all based on actuall weapons. I've RPed many situations in which someone has a personalized katana or gun, but that kind of thing was never in the movie.

Why can't they program futuristic weapons like EMP or laser and stuff?

Maybe the Zionites still have to adhere to the physics of the time. They can't program futuristic weapons because they have never seen them in action. They can't be sure how the weapons will interact with the Matrix and it's physics engine. Their creations would be more like those in a video game (not very realistic).

What good would an EMP do within the Matrix?

Personally, I think Archangel has nailed the answer for the most part. They were able to create things, such as the machine that took the bug out of Neo's stomach (even though such a machine never existed), but it's probably just easier for them to stick with weapons that already exist.
And it's more realistic cinematically.

I suppose thats true, Archangel...it would be like trying to make a new weapon for a game that doesnt support that kind of physics.

I'm sure they can, but let's see... The Matrix was a reflection of the year 1999... It's 2004 now... *Looks out the window* Hot damn! I don't see anyone running around with lazer rifles or EMP blasters... Hmm... What could this mean...

For those of you viewing at home, the answer will be presented on your screen:

Rebels from Zion running around with futuristic weapons in the Matrix would alert any slack-jawed yokel that something is wrong, hence bringing on our good ol' friend, Agent Smith. Perhaps they should screw the futuristic weapons and just paint themselves a billboard saying "ZION REBEL, SHOOT ME HERE."

well when you think about it, Morpheus says they hacked the matrix, so if you werent part of the system couldnt you bend the code as you liked? Trinity does when she defies gravity and does those super jumps. Morpheus bends the rules of the system too. SO wouldnt they be able to somehow make their own weapon HACKs in the construct and load them into the matrix?
Tank: What do you need? (Besides a miracle)
Neo: Guns. Lots of guns.

Then Tank loads PROGRAMS they've made for guns into the construct. Those guns didnt exist in the matrix prior to their insertion. So it doesnt matter what time the matrix takes place in (1999 or what), you can add whatever you want as long as it is programmed and insterted into the construct program.

Morpheus: This is the construct. Its our loading program. We can load anything from clothing, to equipment, weapons, training simulations, ANYTHING WE NEED.

oh, and ThereIsNoMatrix, it doesnt matter. Futuristic weaps or not, a bunch of people dressed in black with REGULAR weapons would still draw suspicion, ye savvy?

I'm guessing they would need some kind of blueprint. Some idea for how the heck the futuristic weapons would work. They can't just make a hack with just the idea of a gun that shoots lasers and blows up the world and makes great grilled cheese sandwiches. They would need to know what generates the power, how to make that, and a whole bunch of other things. Seing as the only futuristic stuff that they know how to make are huge ships (worthless), EMPs (worthless), and pig stickers (those electricity guns, kind of cool, but just no), there's no real way to make lasers and the like.

They already know how to make guns. Hammer, chamber, blah blah blah.

I didnt specify EMP's and Laser guns. you all came up with that :P
WHat I meant were things like those guns that Mouse used. (cam-operated, electrically-driven 12-gauge automatic shotguns with 25-round drum magazines)
things like that. Specially programmed guns, nothing more. ;)

I guess they could do that.Like tanks and fighter jets. They probably heve no use for them since anything they distroy in the matrix doesnt help them in their war.It could have been useful in destroying many targets simultaneously, like they needed to in the 3rd movie.I guess its because it takes a great effort to do this.
