Registering your name on IRC

Why register my name?

You can put a password on your name so that only you can use your name. It gives anyone that connects to IRC around 60 seconds to identify to NickServ. If they do not, NickServ will change their name by adding a _ in front of the name and a - after it. If the person changes their name back to how it was and still does not identify, they get disconnected. This is to prevent people from impersonating others and avoid the confusion of having two or more people known as the same name.

What do I need to provide to register?

You will need to think of a password (at least 6 characters long) and you will also need to know your email address. Think of a password you will not forget and do not ever tell anyone your password. You must supply the correct email address, you will not be emailed by us, we will not supply your email to others (see our privacy policy for more info).

What if I forget my password?

If you forget your password, If you supplied the wrong email address, then you cannot recover your password.

What if I don't use my name?

If you don't identify to NickServ for more than approximately 2 weeks, the name will become de-registered.

How do I register?

Replace the blue text with your own password/email address. The black text is the actual command, and must be spelt perfectly for it to work!

You need to know how to whisper (private message) - see our basic Java help if you do not know how to whisper!

The command - which must be WHISPERED to NickServ - is:-
whisper by using /Nickserv then

register yourpassword your@emailaddress

See what NickServ says in reply, it should either say something like "your password is yourpassword, remember this for future use" or it might say you did not use the command correctly. if you did the command correctly, you now own that name.

Once you own a name, you MUST identify to NickServ as soon as you connect.

How do I identify?

The command - which must be WHISPERED to NickServ - is:-
identify yourpassword

See what NickServ says in reply, it should either say "you are now recognised" or it might say you did not supply the correct password, if you typed it wrong. You must supply the correct password within around 60 seconds or it changes your name. NickServ will disconnect anyone that has 3 incorrect guesses for passwords.

How do I change my password?

You must change password immediately if you suspect anyone may know what it is. First, identify to NickServ, then WHISPER to NickServ:-

set password yournewpassword
(where YOURNEWPASSWORD is your new 6 or more character long password!)

I use more than one name, what should I do?

We recommend you use the same password for all your names, but more importantly, you should link them to each other - this will mean you do not need to identify every time you change name! The command - which must be WHISPERED to NickServ - for linking names is:-

link nick password

(Note: 'nick' is the nick name you're linking to, and 'password' is the password of the name you're linking to)

I can't get a command to work, what should I do?

Remember, if spelling and punctuation isn't exact, it will NOT work. You can't register a name that begins with a _ and ends with a -. Those names are for use by people that have attempted to use a registered name only. If your name begins with a _ and ends with a -, you must change name to the name you wish to register/identify.
