I was watching The Matrix the otherday and only after watching all three, was this foreshadowing able to finally appear before my eyes (I know im slow). I was just about to write something in here about that quote and it's foreshadowing significance. I wanted to browse through first and make sure noone else said it, but I'm glad someone else noticed it.
What I have to add to it though is this...
I believe he actually says "Either you choose to be at your desk on time from this day forward or you choose to find yourself another job". And I try to clarify this not to "put you in your place" because you got it wrong, but rather to try and get the full impact of the quote. I saw it as a huge foreshadow on Neo's entire purpose. Either he chooses to be at his desk (stay in the matrix and be Mr. Anderson) from this day forward, or he chooses to find himself another job (the job of "savior" to the human race, and in all eventuality the Matrix and machines as well).
Neo said it himself, the problem is choice. And I believe the wachowski's were setting us up for that from day one. Before we even knew what the heck we were getting into when we sat down to watch the Matrix for the first time in 1999, before any of the crazy story began to unfold, before any of the crazy fights or effects (with the exception of the then bewildering open Trinity scene), they had already laid before our eyes perhaps one of the most important choices he would ever have to make.
