The whole idea of the kid commiting "suicide" was so he could free himself.
The other "guy" writing to karl popper was Neo.
Just before popper falls, he says "I belive Neo"
And karl doesnt die, the matrix is a program, he is merely taken to zion. There is a time just before you are born where you are purely free, this is when they can free certain people before the matrix takes them, this time also applies shortly before death which is why karl never died.

i have this theory about why there was a funeral for kid, even that there was body. here's what we know:
-when someone dies, they are not plugged in to the matrix--morpheus even says how they are liquified and fed intravenously to the living. we know people don't disappear when they die, their body contintues to stay into the matrix, which means when someone dies, a program is created to look exactly the body.
-we also know when someone is unplugged, the machines think they have died. that's why neo is dumped into that liquid stuff. he is about to be liquified.
this means that when kid woke up, the machines thought he had died, so his body lay lifeless in the matrix (when in actuality, it was just a program made to look like his body)

I honestly feel sorry for those of you who assumed that sence the computer screen had shown the " You are not alone. " thing at the end that it had happened after Karl died. Simply because of somethings timing or what if followed after in the short Anime doesnt mean that that is when it accured in chronological order in the piece itself. Now, I happen to think that with Karl freeing himself it was going back to the World Record episode simple for the fact that he brought himself out the matrix as well if only for a moment. I do belive that it would be possible to free ones self if the matrix were in depending on the circumstance of an accurance in ones own life. But I am getting off the topic a bit now. Maybe the message was posted after Karl went to sleep but I honestly doubt it was after he was freed.

When you see him falling and the screen goes black, ultimately leading to his eyes opening up again inside of a hovercraft, you hear Morpheus and Trinity talking about him.

Trinity asks: "I didn't know self-substantiation was possible."

Morpheus replies, and then he tells Neo that he saved him, etc. etc.

That's when they replay that image of the computer and the 'You are not alone.' statement, to bring the whole episode full circle.

Pretty much, he willed himself out of the matrix. The machines of course could not just write him off as having dissapeared as he jumped off of his high-schools roof (no doubt people would've been looking from windows) so they orchestrate his death as an elaborate lie.

I agree he was freed...not dead
