They tore down the theatre on-campus here at the university last year, so I've yet to see any of the major movies that came out last year. The school does have a shitty little theatre, though, where they play newer movies right before they're released on DVD.
So I went and saw The Departed last night. Amazingly awesome movie. Without a doubt the best film produced in years. I thoroughly enjoyed The Aviator and other Scorcese films, but he is no doubt at his best with gangster flicks. Although not on the same level as Goodfellas and Casino, this film definitely rocks.
What did you guys think of it?

In the weary dazed state I was in when I saw it I rather enjoyed it, confused me at first but it was well done...still Hollywood's not taking the accolades for this one, I want to see the original Chinese version, a few clips Mac showed me proved that it kicks more ass than The Departed.

I don't know about that, I've seen a few clips of the Chinese version and I was not impressed. At any rate, Scorsese is the absolutel king of gangster films.

I saw the original Chinese version about a month before The Departed. They're pretty evenly matched, but I give the Chinese version ("Infernal Affairs") the edge. It's not actiony, at all, but it's got more impressive acting, a greater sense of suspense (if less "thrills) and a really cool poetic sweep. It's actually moving too. If any of you guys like Tony Leung, you'll like this movie. If you don't know Tony Leung, you'll remember him after this movie.
As for The Departed, yeah it kicked ass, but it wasn't my favourite of the year. That oscar should have gone to Clerks II. I also preferred Casino Royale and The Prestige.
Jack Nicholson's always awesome, I dug Matt Damon being a complete, relentless, utter piece-of-shit bastard to the end, and I've loved DiCaprio for the last couple of years. Mark Wahlberg! Awesome in the first movie I've seen that he wasn't instantly forgettable in! Alec Baldwin's overrated, and I don't really get what Scorcese sees in him.
Dug the dialogue a lot. And the lovely reliable Scorcese violence. This is probably one of the tensest movies I've seen. Probably would have been even tenser if I didn't already know most of the major plot-points... I did like how different a take it was from the Hong-Kong version. I really recommend you see the other one too, even if you do know the plot already.
I was just going through its IMDB quotes page and found this gem:
Colin Sullivan: Fuck you, fuckin' queers. Fucking firemen gettin' pussy for the first time in the history of fire or pussy. Go save a cat from a tree, you fucking homos.
Gotta love those Irish.
