Towards the end of the month, the Chinese Government stepped up the assault by unveiling a new system to prevent individuals from playing online games for more than three consecutive hours, which must be installed for every online game in the country. A few days later, the Chinese government ordered Object Software, a Chinese game developer, to remove a system in its "Fod Online" game that rewards gamers points for killing the characters of other players. World of Warcraft has not been targeted yet, but considering the newly implemented "Honor System" added a few patches ago, many expect it to be next. Players of World of Warcraft are worried with the recent changes. Chinese players have begun an Internet signature campaign protesting the Chinese government's plans to limit the country's online gamers to three hours of consecutive playtime. "These restrictions violate the rights of online game players," one Chinese player wrote on the petition. "Trying to prevent young players from being addicted is good, but this new system will be a total failure." The Chinese Government sites recent situations of game addictions and child neglect for these recent changes but will these harsh restrictions curb the epidemic?

Geez my knees, lol. Holy cow. I like the basic idea behind it. (Such as kids younger than eighteen being unable to play) but limiting play-time to 3 times a day, AND illegalizing games where you kill? Lol, is there an mmorpg out there that DOESN'T involve some form of killing? Sounds pretty ridiculous.

I'm sorry, but being raised in a home where "quality time with the family" meant sitting on Dad's lap, playing some first-person-shooter like Wolfenstein (or the later Doom), I find this a wee bit on the extreme side. Just a smidgon.
I mean, look at me: I've been killing virtual people since I was five, and I turned out just fine. Right? Right.

What's to discuss? They're insane. It's a lesson for the ages. What starts as dictatorship could very well end up in restriction of online gaming.

Man i think it sucks to be chineese i mean look at it. Theres to many people over there (and i cant be around a lot of people for more than 1 hour) and now they are starting to ban WOW and the others. If i lived over there i whould start a movement of anarchy and choas.

Yeah, choas is good isn't it?
Anyhow I really hate how society seems to be blaming video games for it's failures, this whole situation seems crazy.

That coming from a guy who can't use the spacebar, wow.
Anyjew, blaming something on a videogame is a copout. There are so many other factors for child violence it's not even funny. Hey I've got an idea, why don't you just get rid of TV, China? Yay!

How much are you gonna pay me to say yes?
I think it is a shame to punish the masses. It should be up to parents to regulate their own kids. Blaming games, music, etc. has gone on too long now. It is time for the parents to take responsibility for their own kids. Or here is a thought, the kids actually take some responsibility. That would be an awesome concept.

I don't know if you heard but a while back a Chinese Woman murdered her hasband after playing a MMORPG for like 18 hours straight or some thing, that i can understand a punishment for, but punishing the entire country is a bit much, true its most likely not due to the point i mentioned but still its a little far, what MMORPG games don't feature killing, features fishing or playing instruments and thats only fun for so long (about 30 seconds on average) killing people is much more fun and requires skill, i play an online game called GunzOnline, where the sole purpose is to stab or shoot anything that runs, yet i don't go out and shoot/stab people, because i have a little thing i like to call "Self-Control" knowing its wrong to shove a 10 inch blade into the face of another person is one thing that stops me from doing it, that and the fact i have no real need to stab anyone (it would just pass the time) no i don't know about any of you, but personally i think if you are willing to kill someone you do it, a game/movie/book or whatever does not make people violent, only violent people are violent...

ok i see no logic in what the chinese government are doing. i mean, if a child is reared properly, then playing those kind of games will do no harm. personally, i think it would be a pretty boring place without games like that!! but seriously, we all have tendencies within us to commit henious crimes, no matter what they do. as far as child neglect comes in, maybe if they sterilise the women who do this, and take thier children away they might learn, or better yet, why the hell dont they bring in laws for having so many children for a severly over populated country? they are attacking the best thing instead!! the games.......whats wrong with a bit of blood and guts on a computer screen, they should be thankful that humanity dont live completely in a world like that.
