As much as I'm sure the Wachowskis new that it would work like that, I don't believe them to stoop to a level like that and I think they definetely had a legitimate reason for including it that doesn't have to do with profit.

I keep receiving SMS messages from my cell on this very subject. Everytime I read the voicemails I can only shake my head. Humans, as very simple yet complex beings are fueled and motivated by a number of things, fear, hope, joy, pain, sorrow, greed. The dance seen in Zion illustrates these very human drives and capacities irregardless of the time location or era in which humans exist somethings stay the same. The dance unified the thoughts, feelings, and desires of all in Zion before their potential annilhilation.

to me, it just signaled freedom and unity and the actual sex part was to draw in some more people. Because there are some people who think that a movie isn't a movie without a sex scene.

Not only does the scene further emphasise that trinity and neo are very much in love, the sequence has a bigger purpose to outline in terms of theme. The notions of dance, the rhythm of body and sexual love (as opposed to functional reproduction) are things that have little or no purpose in a rational sense. They are not rational, nor are they logical. But they are pure human traits. Like hope and belief - they cannot be defined.

But as Zion represents the body (with the matrix being the mind and the machine world representing spirit) The answer lies in a fusion or peace between the primal, the logical and the spiritual. A ying-yang. A balance. That is how Neo becomes 'enlightened' in the end. To take out this overtly sweaty, sexy, body scene would be to weaken the theme.

to make d@#^ sure the movie got rated R, that's what the scene was for.
stupid really. it was entirely possible to get a larger audience with a PG-13 rating in my opinion.
same reason the bug scene in the first movie was so gross - when they could have just put a microscopic bug on him - to make sure the movie got rated R when it's story isn't really an R rated story at heart

Reloaded made $281 million (US) in its theater release and $145 million (US) in DVD sales. I dont think the R rating hurt it at all.
