XBOX 2 vs. Playstation-- PSX, PS3

Helios

Well possibly late this year or next we Playstation users will be getting PSX, a modified PS2 with dvd/cd burner/player, MP3 player, TV tuner, 120 GB hard drive, supports all cd formats,1 usb port, and a built in high speed ethernet
the PSX is out already in Japan (like always) , and the games will run/load much faster than before and some might say the built in intenet thing is only copying off of xbox but where are they gonna put it and xbox's internet gaming sucks you have to pay for the service,

the XBOX 2 supposed to come out in 2006 (at earliest is the exact same without the MP3 player part, but this is microsofts, but now back to sony the mysterious PS3 ohh will be coming out around the same time so will the next Nintendo system that no one probaly cares about

but back to the PS3, it will be running with a cell prossecor thats still in development this very new chip typr will run at TERAflop speeds (1 trillion calculation per second) and there are rumors that a prototype is already built and has been clocked at 110Ghz !!! but this prototype is still just a rumor the ps3 will hold about 5 of these, the ps3 will also use "Blue-Ray" discs that hold up to 24 Gb they're also coming out with dual layered disc that hold 50GB, compared to normal discs of only 4.5 Gb(we will never see double disc games again lol) and between this time to the release about 2 to 3 years a PS 2.5 will be released just a ps2 that runs faster than the original

even the upcoming nintendo and xbox 64 bit proccesors will come no where near this kind of power

and did i forget the upcoming PS2 games Gran Turismo 4, Grand Theft Auto 5!!!, Metal Gear Solid 3, Syphon Filter : The OmeGA Strain, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tommorow,Driver 3 if you didnt have ps2, now is the time to get one

with all this in Playstations future they are going to leave the competition far behind, ohh wait what competition lol

First of all, it is very exciting and interesting to hear about this, which appears to be a large leap for gaming. However, me being me, I don't like it.

Unless you can buy upgraded parts, beef up your system, and download updates and patches online, forget about it. It will cost too much money, you might as well buy something with an OS and a little more functionality, that would be cool. Wait, don't they have things like this that ALREADY play games? Oh yeah, computers.

I don't want to play @$$hole (Devil's Advocate) here, but I will, because I can.

Problems:
* only 1 USB port. actually, that's good. you can either put in a mouse or keyboard, meaning that you'll be limited to a controller for first-person shooters, and that the console gamers STILL wouldn't be able to kill PC gamers IF they played on the same network. As we all know, PC is ultimately superior for shooters.

*I highly doubt a 110ghz processor has been built as of yet. The government's got some stuff faster than 3.8, which is the fastest i've seen any 3.2 chip OC'ed to as of yet.

*They're making 24 and 50 GB discs that will only play on their systems? Lame.

*Price. Who wants to pay the outrageous price for this? (and it will be outrageous.) After the dust settles, if all the PSX is is a gaming console, they can't charge some absurd amount for the console (upwards of $600-800). Also, games using the technology you described would run more than games do now. You're paying for the cost of developing the technology, and if it doesn't fill up the disc, then you're basically getting screwed.

*Size. If games are taking up upwards of 10-20GB, that's a long ass game. You'll spend endless hours running around looking for stuff on a wild goose chase. If you want to do that, that's fine. Look at the youth, they'll no doubt get these consoles and all of their time will be consumed by gaming. They'll live in these fantasy worlds, games will be more and more violent, and ultimately, they will be unprepared to face the real world, because their parents see the games as time they can relax and not worry about the kids. When this superconsole is released, great things will happen, but there could be adverse effects as well.

Thanks for listening to the rant, disregard the post.

I dont mind which gaming station I have, although I have to admit that playstation's are the ones that i usually go for.
Its exciting to here about the new product, but I hate it how once you buy a gaming station, a new one comes out a couple of years later.. I should just wait until I am about to die, then buy the lasets one.
old games arnt usable on new systems, they cost twice as much as the last one you paid for. but then again they are made by filthy rich corporations.
Helios

no actually the 27 and 50 GB discs are not just for playstation its a new dvd/cd format that eventually will be the norm.
and those 10-20GB games will probaly be just as long as some of the games we currently have, but you must know that a game with high quality of the graphics takes up a lot of space on a disc

and that 110 Ghz processor i said was only rumor but they most definatly are "on the drawing board", and the new proccesors which will eventually take the place of pentiums, is a completely new design of computer chip pushing past moore's law you might say

and all this technology youre paying for, is mostly for the "supercomputing" chip eveything else is simply redisgn
those discs will be exactly the same what expands the amount of space is how theyre recorded, all discs (right now) are made/burned with a red laser (long wavelenths) these 24-50 GB doscs are burned using a blue laser (short wavelenth) so a new game will still only cost 49.95 the actual disc has nothing to do with it, it will still cost about 10 cents to make a little plastic disc, first off anything above 49.95 for a game and no one would buy it

the PSX is actually more of a entertainment center than a game console and its going to be advertised that way that's why it cost $714 thats only if you order a japanese one though, even when they come to the states this price will not drop that much

but the ps3 being a console exclusively (with the other stuff still though) will not cost anymore than 400 it cant and wont if it plans to make a big profit but like all consoles nowdays they drop in price, take the playstation 2 for example when it first came out it was $300 but then it dropped to 200 and now its 150 unless you get the one with the network adapter thats 170.

the psx and ps3 will do the same if you wait long enough and dont be stupid and grap the first one's to hit shelves

and the old games (ps1,ps2) are going to be usuable on the new system at least thats what Ken Kutaragi, vice president of Sony and chief executive of gaming subsidiary Sony Computer Entertainment said

but with computers games get beter and they require your computer to be faster, more space ect. a processor can cost you 200 bucks a bigger hard drive 150+ all of the mojor components in a computer will cost you 100+ dollors and games get faster nearly every year, so paying 200-300 bucks every 3+ years for a console isnt that bad in comparison
stalin6025

well yeah i suppose so, if you look at it in that concept, but i dont play all that many computer games cause i dont like filling up my hardware and slowing it down.
plus i have enough crap on my computer already.

I don't "do" playstation, there to easily broken, I only play Xbox, and I really would rather buy Halo 2 than PS3, and if there was a GTA 5, they would have to make GTA4 before that, and Vice City wasn't GTA 4, it was Vice City.

Thank you for telling us what we already know. Your contribution is much appreciated.

on-topic: DPD, I agree with you on most parts, however I consider longer, more broader games to be a good thing. Sure, kids may spend more time behind the pc, but this is, after all, the information age.

The problem the youth will probably face in the future is not "gaming" too much, but being unable to choose between the wide spectra of possibilities open to them.

Anyways, I love computer games, and I play them a lot, yet I have enough time to fully dedicate myself to respond to any useless thread you guys come up with :)

i'm subscribe to gamespy arcade.
and in 1 mail i get from them (out new games, and up-dates)
there whas a part over Xbox 2, the PS3 and the new gamecube

it also showed pictures of how they are going to possible look
i say possible, because they wrote that it isn't sure yet on how they will look.

the PS3 will be round, and be light green tinted with white parts.
the gamecube 2 (or it will get a new name) will be bigger but it won't be a square but the lenght will be larger. and it will be red
the Xbox 2 forgot that one. but i will be alot smaller said the picture.

this is not sure. this is how a possibility of how it will look be.

this is correct, but you can find places to get parts for cheaper, at almost cost. also, the computer has more function than a gaming console. it appears that they are trying to erase this, but the PC reigns supreme because of it's extra uses. consoles are appearing to get crazy good for their purpose, and there are great times for gamers everywhere.

no one really knows what the Ps3 will look like just take a look at all of these concepts http://home.btconnect.com/hgi/ps3/
i dont really know much about the xbox or gamecube 2 concepts
not much of a fan of either anyway, gamecube just is too much of a "kiddie" system and xbox just has a lot of ported games from ps2
ThereIsNoMatrix

I have to agree - the PC does kick any console's ass. However, I do have an Xbox and out of all three systems, it's probably the best...

In Xbox's defense, they're coming out with an "xbox media center extender kit" soon. Read about it here:

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/461/461606p1.html

What it does is allow your Xbox to wirelessly connect to your computer. From there you can share music, photos, and watch TV shows and record them to your computer. Therefore you can get your TV, MP3's, extra hard drive space, and all that good stuff. Since most of the games mentioned, except for Grand Turismo, will be coming out for Xbox and PS2, it looks like it's a good time for gamers everywhere.

Those Blue-Ray discs are pretty cool. I can't remember exactly, but another company is making discs similar to the Blue-Ray ones. One of these types of discs can hold like 5 GB more than the other, but I forgot which one it was. Sony is producing the Blue-Ray discs, so Sony and the other company are competing for who will replace the DVD.
Helios

that xbox media center extender kit" sound cool but im not gonna buy an xbox for that, and besides you still have to pay for xbox live, xbox = $50 starter kit + $50 every year after that
PS2 = $25 network adapter free service
im still not that impressed by the media extender kit though it kinda late and if the PSX comes down to a damn resonable price
and on xbox's next system they're raising the hard drive space from 8 Gb to 10 Gb Whoo Whoo!! a whole 2 GB
( http://news.com.com/2100-1040-274250.html?legacy=cnet)
the playstation hard when it comes out in march will hold 40 GB
big difference

and all that other stuff for the media ceter extender, i wouldnt need that my computer can do all that stuff, thers no reason why my gaming console needs to aswell and recording tv shows i definately dont need thats what tapes are for, besides if im recoding tv after two weeks im never gonna look at it again, it would just be extra clutter on my hard drive (even though its 500 Gb not filling up too fast)
ThereIsNoMatrix

Eh, buddy, that link you gave for the Xbox hard drive is about 3 years old... And... it's referring to the first Xbox, lol. There has been no official anouncement on the XBOX 2 hard drive, but click here:

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/449/449314p2.html

Near the bottom of the page it states:

The first thing we're just about guaranteed to see is a larger hard drive. We're going to guess the Xbox 2 will feature a 40GB - 60GB hard drive, many times larger than the current one.

So yeah, Xbox2 will have AT LEAST the same amount of disk space as PS3, if not 1/3 more space. Also, I can't understand why you would find the xbox media center useless, but this PSX thing wonderful... They both appear to perform the same functions... Maybe there's something I'm missing - You got a link with info on the PSX? The only big difference between these two things (from my understanding) is the xbox media center utilizes your computer also. Oh, and of course, the media center is an add-on to the current xbox, which means it's cheaper. Also, I thought the PS1 was named PSX or something like that... So many names beginning with PS... I'm getting p/o.
Helios

http://geartest.com/sections/games/psx.html this is just some info on the psx no site seems to have a complete description you may have to search it your self to get the other info, some features like the MP3 play back ability wont come with the psx japan release but will come later as downloads, the us release late this year will come pre packed with everything

and if those are the final hard drive numbers for the xbox 2 that wont be much to the psx which will come in either a 120 GB or 250 GB version and the ps3 will most certainly have more space

not that xbox isnt a decent system (better than gamecube) but even its xbox 2 doesnt seem to have to strong of a release im not saying this from opinion, if you look up both xbox 2 and ps3/psx systmes it says in most of them that the specs on the new xbox are not close to the ps3, which is a switch from ps2/xbox comparison where the xbox i admit had slightly better graphics, but didnt have many games to back it up the only game ive heard talked about was Halo 2 and halo 3 for xbox 2 its as if they have nothing else to offer as of yet

the whole PS whatever thing came about because it is easier to say/type than writing out Playstation every time, and i dont think the ps1 was called psx but that was the name of an unofficial playstation magazine and website
Jetfire

This is very exciting, seeing the prototypes of the new consoles and the concept sketches... I've always loved "gaming"... I'm sure everyone else does also...
Helios

yeah its great waiting for the next amazing console the
"super console" (Ps3) ive heard it called to bad it wont be here till at least 2006, ahhh the next two years are gonna be torture
ill just have to wait it out with some good games

by the way Jetfire i heard/saw that you had left well i guess not
mazman

Ever heard of the PSP or Playstation Portable? You know, the portable console from Sony that is just as powerful as the PS2 and is about the size of an N-gage? The one thats also a DVD and mp3 player? The one that will confirm Sony's domination of the console market? Yeah! That one!
Helios

yeah i heard about that one dont know if im gonna get it though GBA will definatley be run out hehe
