south/north relationships

Malak

ok this is a question for only the americans here:
why are tensions so tight between southern people and northern people? i am from the midwest, and all the rednecks at my school say that i am a yankee, yet the midwest had nothing to do in the civil war! does anyone else experiance this? oh and btw, i go to a school in the south :(
smith_fan

I'm not american but don't take it too seriously... we have the same here. The West is making fun of the east and the opposite... it's somehow normal... :D
Malak

How much do they ridicule each other? Here, those idiotic rednecks think that everyone that is north or north-west of Virginia is a Yankee. They write on knives and crap like that that "The south will rise again."

ok, I admit...it's not that hard here but well... it's more like a competition between west and east... and we love making jokes about the east... but it's not hate or something like that.
NMN

thats why the west is great, it wasnt even there during the civil war
and rednecks tend to be ignorant and the world has come a long way since 1860
the south will never rise again.
i think the us has to be more afraid of california than the west
HomoUniversalis

Yeah.. They should fear "The Governator".

Actually, I don't think he is so bad. After all, it's not like he has any power, he is just a public face. The real decisions are made behind the scenes, backstage, by the party...

Well, I'm not from the east, which is most likely the area that you're referring to, but I suppose people still harbor foul feelings from the Civil War. That could be one reason, and unfortunately, some people will keep their stereotypes and grudges forever.

i am from the midwest, and all the rednecks at my school say that i am a yankee, yet the midwest had nothing to do in the civil war! does anyone else experiance this? oh and btw, i go to a school in the south :(

Where in the midwest? I find it funny that what is referred to as the midwest is sometimes more on the eastern side of the country. Take St. Louis, it's more central-southeast than it is midwest. I'm not very well versed in Civil War history, but I'm pretty sure that parts of the midwest played roles in the war, and they may just be generalizing. Why should you care about some kids calling you a yankee? If you're calling them rednecks, you're asking to be called a yank. I don't get called a whole lot of names because the area I'm from is pretty diverse. However, I'm labeled with stereotypes all the time by peers and acquaintences. Just don't let it bother you, there's no reason to get upset over being called names. Start to worry then they throw insults from barrels.

In Wisconsin, it played a very little part in the Civil War, it wasn't even in any major battles!
DPD

yes i see...well wisconsin is north so that's why they're calling you a yankee.
Malak

It's in the north, but then so is Oregon. Wisconsin is still considered midwest because if it is farther west then Kentucky, it is midwest. But that isn't how the hillbillies at my school think.
Valasher

There's always going to be regional differences between any region, North, South, East, or West. I've lived in Colorado, Tennessee, Missouri, Florida, Virginia (and Washington D.C.), but I've also visited NY, NJ, CA, WY, WV, WA, AL, KS, and so many others. Anywhere you go people are their location, people are so limited to their regions sometimes, I don't really want to be my region.
Malak

Same here! I would kill to move back to Wisconsin! No one can ridicule me there!
HomoUniversalis

Well, People from Limburg (a provence) have a different accent. We pronounce the g different than the rest of the Netherlands (actually we are the only ones, pronouncing it right :p).

This creates some tention between Limburg and the rest, but nothing we can't handle.. After all, we make the best beer in the word!

You're from WI, Malak??? I live in Madison. Liberalville, lol. Suits me to a T.

But I agree with Valasher that all regions are different, pretty much anywhere you go. We summer out east (NH, actually) and things are sooooo different there! I love it usually, cultural differences. Living in Germany was hard, but so very interesting.

Ye gods, I don't envy your situation though, that's for sure.... but like DPD said, don't worry til they're throwing insults from barrels -- or perhaps knives instead of insults! When my husband finally finished college & started job hunting I specifically said to him, "anywhere but south." Fortunately we haven't had to leave Madison.
Malak

Ya I was born in Fort Atkinson, but I grew up in Jefferson. That is about 45 min. from Madison, right? You seem lucky, but I might possibly move when I finish 8th grade, so that is the end of this year, 5 hours north, to Blacksburg, VA. Right now I live in the same town they caught Eric Rudolph in. Ironic huh?
