I learned to walk; since then have I let myself run. I learned to
fly; since then I do not need pushing in order to move from a spot.
Now am I light, now do I fly; now do I see myself under myself.
Now there danceth a God in me.-
Boris Vian used to be my favorite writer.
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

(it seems i like gay stories (by gay i mean bisexual or homosexual characters/referance) i dont know why, i just think they're beautiful.)
I also like The raging quiet by Sherryl Jordan, Shakespeare, and lots of non-fiction books (psychology mostly)
...I'm sure I'll think of about 20 other books I love as soon as I post this...
im currently reading Aboration Gap by Alastair reynolds the final sequel in a great trilogy revelation space and redemtion ark were the other two its a great series because it portrays a realistic future i would recommend this for anyone that likes sci-fi books also other good ones are just about anything by Isaac Asimov or Larry Niven

"Man is something to be surpassed"

-the W's
Nietzche rox!!! W's rox!!!
So, surpass yourself, man, and become the Superman, too!!!

I'm a William Gibson fan (as a few here already know) so i'd recommend :
Virtual Light (part 1)
The Idoru (part 2)
All Tommorrows Parties (part 3)
Also : Neuromancer (wonders if smith_fan got it for christmas or not)
I also love the LOTR trilogy but find his earlier book : The Silmarillion better, and more epic. (actually ROTK equalled it in places, i have to admit.)
I've also just got a history book about medieval europe but thats a bit heavy for me right now, so i'll wait until i've got used to arriving in 2004 first.

i read that book once, someone i know said it was a good book, but i found it a little boring, it was meant to be like a cyberpunk novel, but it felt like a 1920's cyberpunk novel, but there were a few good parts thoughout
To Neomancer i've never read it but it is supposed to be really good, i'll have to check it out and see what i think of it.
Stalin Virtual Light wasn't the best Gibson book for me, but i'm a big Dark Angel fan and there's a lot of that in there so i still enjoyed it, but parts 2 and 3 of the same trilogy get better.
i just finished probably still nick swansen by virginia woolf. she also wrote make lemonade and true believer which are really good. probably still nick swansen is really depressing though. my all time fav has to be the harry potter books. the movies are too corny.
Speaking of cyberpunk books.... :)
"Snowcrash" was excellent. I read it a few years ago, but have since forgotten the author.
I have a quest for the avid readers out there. Anyone know of good Sci-fi writers or books that you think I would enjoy?
Mystery is ok too. I just haven't read anything in a long time. Let's see... the last book I read was 'Brave New World'. Actually now that I mention that. I'm off to get 1984. Wow, that was weird.
Still up for suggestions, though.
I'm bored... Now, I absolutely detest reading anything printed on paper during summer vacation, but I may be willing to make an exception here. Has anyone read "The Da Vinci Code?" If so, how is it? Several people I know have given me rave reviews - Even one of my friends who never reads a book he isn't forced to, has read it. I downloaded the book off kazaa a couple days ago, as my library won't have any of its 10 copies returned within the next month or so, but I have been hesitant to read it... Nearly 500 pages long... Scary stuff. Is it worth the time?

If you're still looking, I might have some mystery for you.
Both authors are fairly well known but just in case I think I should offer you Agatha Christie, especiallly Ten Little Indians/And Then There Were None, Death on the Nile, and Murder on the Orient Express, and Arthur Conan Doyle (aka Sherlock Holmes :p), especially Sign of the Four.
Hmph, there's also this really good Israeli sorta mystery book but I don't know how likely you are to find it. Anyhow, it's called "Someone to Run With" by David Grossman, and it's one of the best books I've read.
Bah. For anyone else, I don't think I've mentioned Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. I recently found out that the one I read was an abridged version, but apparantely all readable versions are abridged... in the full version he went on about boring Parisian politics and army formations and minute boring details, or so I hear. Anyhow, the version I read was enough to be probably the best book I've ever read. Very very recommended.
TiNM, can't help you here :( But I've been considering this book too. I'll be anxiously waiting for answers too. :)
I had to read a book over the summer and currently I've yet to read one. At this time I have about a month left to finish one because the first week of school we must do a report on it. I am thinking of reading a Harry Potter book but I haven't made up my mind yet, but I know I want to read one I can probably finish in three weeks.
I'm not a big fan of reading so thats one of the reasons for not doing the work yet. Last year I did the same and had to read a book within the last two weeks of school and I don't want to do that again. I'm not sure if there is a book hardness I should aim for going into the 10th grade, but I don't care as a book is a book.
Well I am trying to read now Cradle n All by James Patterson, one of my favorite authors.
I am looking for I,Robot. Now thats what I wanna really read now.
If any of you have ever read the Dune books, those are pretty good. I also couldn't help but notice that Paul Atreides/ Muad'dib has a lot in common with Neo: the prophecy/ he's the chosen one/ the revolution, and yes, they even both get blinded. Strange, no?
Anyway - the best books I've ever read (and I only say books plural, because it is one HUGE book, but split up into four parts because it phisically impossible to bind it as one book) is Otherland by Tad Williams. If you've never read it, I recommend you do so as soon as possible, although it may take awhile, as each book is around 700 pages.
Otherland: City of Golden Shadow
Otherland: River of Blue Fire
Otherland: Mountain of Black Glass
Otherland: Sea of Silver Light
It has a lot in common with The Matrix when you really read into it - reality, virtual reality, 'jacking in" so to speak. The books are extremely well written, excellently developed characters and one of the most intricate and involving conspiracy plots I've ever read. If you're easily bored, I'd look elsewhere, but if you want to read a novel(s) that will completly immerse you into the story, then Otherland is definitly a book series you should read.
Oh, and The Gunslinger series by Stephen King is also spectacular.
Sea of Silver light is actually a little over 1k pages. Though ive actually only read the last one (sea of silver light) and river of blue fire. I suppose one day i'll get around to getting the other two.
Im actually reading 'I,Robot' right now, the original one that is. Im also reading 'The Gods Themselves' also by Isaac, and im reading 'Chasm City' and Revelation Space. Even though 'I,Robot' is my main focus right now I tend to read whatever im in the mood for at the moment.
I think Otherland and the Alastair Reynolds books (look at previous post) are the only ones I've read by themselves. partly because they were just that good :) and partly out of necessity. Theres' a lot of little details to pay attention to in those.
Yeah, you really have to read the first two to get the whole story. I'm surprised you understood anything that was going on by reading the second and last books first, lol.
Well in the last one there is a few page sypnosis on each previous book.
Right now I'm eating my way through 'Ender's Shadow' by Orson Scott Card for like the 50th time. Some other books I've read this summer are:
I, Robot
Mortal Fear (Greg Iles)
Dead Sleep (" ")
The Footprints of God (" ")
To Kill A Mockingbird (It's for school. Blergh.)
Ender's Game (I read this one a lot as well)
The Devil Wears Prada (Quirky novel about an evil boss)
The Devil's Teardrop (Not related in anyway to the one above.)
Any magazine I can get my hands on
The Art of the Matrix
I've read a ton more over the year but I can't remember any aside from Harry Potter.
Well in the last one there is a few page sypnosis on each previous book.
Yeah, but that's only a few pages summerizing 2 books (the ones you missed) spanning over 1400 pages in total. I assure you, you missed a ton.
well I'll get to them one day, just like the rest of the Ender Quartet. Ive read Xenocide and Children of the mind, but I want to get 'The Hive Queen' and 'Hegemon'.
In case you're wondering I end up reading parts of a book series because I go to the book store and pick up whatever looks interesting. I usually forget to check if there are others before it. example; i read Children of the mind before I read Xenocide go figure.
I am currently reading the Dark Tower Series. Mix up Sliders with the Wild Wild West, and that's the Dark Tower Series. I also have been reading a lot of Tom Clancy books lately.
I'm currently reading Asimov's script version of "I, Robot"

Yeah! I love the Dark Tower series. What book are you on? Because the further the story progresses, the deeper the story gets; trust me, it gets pretty strange. But in a good way.
