Hello,
Forgive me if this topic has already been discussed ....
but how does the ppl trapped in the matrix reproduce? by which I mean, the ppl trapped in the pod used as batteries?
The matrix and the battery pods have been going on for at least 100 yrs as we know. And when ppl die, they are used as food for the other ppl. what happens to those empty pods? When ppl have sex and reproduce in the matrx, they aren't really doing it in real life i.e. their pods. Also, the "mind" cant make a person physically pregnant. So where do those babies come from? clones? then how do those clones develope? those black socket things cant fit an embryo baby. Also, for the sake of arguement, say that the machines take the sperm from a male and insert it in a female, what are the possiblities that when that female gives birth, she wont wake up from her "sleep". I'd say pretty slim, since you're squeezing a watermelon through a mouse hole.
All and all, I believe this to a be a fatal flaw in the matrix story line. Unless there's something I dont know....
My idea is this:
The event of intercourse occurs. This is a sign for a machine to grow a baby. This baby is grown and put in a tube. Then they get plugged up to the matrix, the machine sends a signal to whatever other machine which modifies matrix to take into account the new baby. Though i think by the way they are grown, they would be inserted into the matrix before they have a conscious mind, so the instant it does kick in they are in the matrix and they don't see the real world at all
alright, how would the machines go about growing a baby? cutting up the female? and even so, let's go alone with your idea, and the baby is growing, and inserted before a concious mind, how would the baby then give itself an image? we are told that the mind projects what we think we look like, yet the baby has never seen another human baby or of the sort. also, the baby has no depth perception (thus is why the peeka-boo game is so entertaining for the baby). So wouldnt it's image of itself be distorted? a 2d baby, at best?
I think that the machines are intelligent and efficient enough to produce humans through invitrofertilizaton.
yeah, I am sure that they would harvest eggs and sperm as needed.
-WC-
Yeah, well if they are smart enough to harvest humans, i THINK that they will be smart enough to find a way to let us reproduce!
i think that we should march up to the wachowski bros house and ask RIGHT THIS SECOND!! :p
And if you can kill others in the matrix - it's pretty safe bet that you can get pregnant and deliver a baby in the maitrx.
Such basic human biology must be addressed in the matrix otherwise the simulation would be rejected by EVERYONE.
Yes?
Well, sure, they have to think of a way for us to reproduce, but how is the question? In my opinion, and unless I'm missing something, they're explanation of what the matrix is, and how humans are trapped (segregated) in the pods, how do the humans "reproduce" in the "real" world? They explained death in the matrix. You're brain thinks you're dead, so you are dead in "real" life, but the brain can't physically make a female pregnant. And as far we know, when the ppl have sex in the matrix, it's all mental in reality, nothing physical. So how do the machines go about recropping the humans? and by any means, wouldnt the humans be woken up to the reality?
just a thought, I know that it's just a movie, but b/c of this contingency in the storyline, it just makes the story harder to believe that it could be a possible harsh reality.
bottomline is, I think the matrix story is "incomplete", and not as epic as I once thought,
unless i'm missing something from the movies.
In my humble opinion you are being too critical. It doesn't matter.
It is also said they are 'grown' i.e. cloned.
Now, being so far in the future they could either:
A) Make ALL the babies from the same egg/sperm (how it is harvested does not matter, they are in total control of these humans so take a guess). Then genetically engineer the new baby by comparing the DNA of the two parents plugged into the matrix, and alter the embryo's DNA accordingly.
OR:
B) Manufacture egg + sperm OR straight embryo using advanced technology unbeknown to current day man.
As Chancellor Hamman says in the movie, it isn't important to understand how it works, but the reason why it works.
Overcritical, maybe, let's say, for arguement, sake, that they do have all that advanced technology to clone or what not, it still doesnt explain the newly inserted baby's image of itself in the matrix. We know that a person's image in the matrix is just an image of himself, yet we see babies in 3d and what not. This goes against our common knowledge that newborns can only perceive in 2d as well as some other limitations that I cant remember off hand.
[babies have no depth perception (thus is why the peeka-boo game is so entertaining for a baby). So wouldnt it's image of itself be distorted? a 2d baby, at best?]
Like I said before, I still enjoy the movie and its storyline, but now it's not as epic nor as provocative.
With regards to the self residual image stuff. That is something that Morpheus says to Neo when they are in the construct.
It would be fair to assume that this self residual image stuff only applys to people who are hacking into the matrix. Otherwise granny would THINK her glasses are not on her head, and they would suddenly disappear and everyone around her would spin out.

In the first movie when Morpheus was explaining "what is the matrix", there was a picture of a tiny baby with black tubes in it. Thus, those black sockets do fit. Since technology has advanced to the point of AI, it is not unreasonable to expect AI has developed a method to clone and produce babies. They then build more and more pods in their 'fields', and 'insert' the new babies into a new conciousness of the matrix. (They can also use the empty pods left behind by expired or rejected bodies).
Meanwhile, 'life' continues in the Matrix with people apparently falling in love and 'procreating' as humans do. Not every attempt results in pregnancy, and obviously those that do contain the conciousness of a new (real) baby on the outside world that has been freshly inserted into the matrix.
Wow, I'm overanalyzing now, but I think it's a feasible explanation that fits in with the concept of the matrix vs real life.
View Full Version : How does the matrix reproduce??
Who's with me? Matrix too short! - Very Interesting..
