TheSpectator
At the end of Reloaded Neo met the Architect, a old-looking man who finds it a sport to talk as difficult as is humanly possible. It was believed that he is the one who created and maintains the Matrix-code. Because of Revolutions and things I found by watching the movie, I came to understand that the role of the Architect is not that important, because it is not he who maintains the code, the Oracle does!!!!!
The Architect is a perfect program, no emotions or feelings, he sees everything as part of an equation, choices are just another variable in this equation. He is the one who created the perfect equation, the perfect world that we call the Matrix. But as he said before, it is a disaster, because of the imperfection in every human being. He was, version after version, frustrated by failure, because he couldn't understand what he was doing wrong. In his eyes the world he created was the most perfect solution he could come up with.
In a later version of the Matrix another program was created, to investigate certain aspects of the human psyche (emotions), she discovered the reason why the program doesn't work and helped the Architect to create a new version - at this point we are already at version 4 or 5.
The Architect created the perfect equation and it is now the Oracle's job to keep the perfect equation running in an imperfect mind. Slowly, but certainly the equation will unbalance itself, giving room for people to escape the Matrix, the Oracle comes up with a final solution to rebalance the equation: the creation of The One (I'm not saying Neo is a program, but he can be given special powers by the System and so it has nothing to do with some kind of code he carries), combined with the birth of Smith - two extremes in the same world which will ultimately assimilate each other, so that the equation will be rebalanced.
This is off course a great theory, but I believe you want some proof:
In all the 3 movies you see the Matrixcode running over the screens, perfectly like a summerrain over a windowscreen. But at the end of Revolutions, the code got all messed up and irregular. That proces started at the very moment Smith assimilated the Oracle - from that moment Smith gained control over the equation and started to unbalance it in a extreme proportion.
When Neo and Smith met in the street, Smith said: "Like what I've done with the place?" I think that Smith gained control of the equation and started to change the Matrix in his own interest: to get what Neo has, he must change the Matrix-code, giving him the power to fly for instance. He calles it not for a reason: This is my world!
At the end of the movie the Architect and The Oracle met in the park. The architect said: "You've played a very dangerous game!" "Change always is..." Obviously the Oracle was the one who had/has control over the processes inside the Matrix, the Architect only plays a minor role in this.
It is the Oracle's job to keep everything balanced, in that case I see her as the Real Architect. Furthermore every program inside the Matrix and every human with a purpose will meet the Oracle, so she can indirectly control the actions of these RSI and so control the flow in the Matrix.
