sometimes I think of my computer as AI in the sense that it has to take on my charateristics with programs that I use... sites that I visit and even how I type...

I belive that my computer while not in complete control of itself & it's functions, has a conscious

Dunno if iīm goin insane, but i feel a certain connection with my computer. Like a few weeks ago, i formatted and reinstalled the whole ****, and then i felt this NEED for cleaning my room as well (Wich is something i only do eery 6.th month).

It's job is to be a 'desktop' and a 'file cabinet', it may be a computer but that doesn't mean it has a concious. (Which in my mind is 'Super AI') Create the AI first, then you can make friends with it.

If I am my computer. Then does that mine that I am a computer since I am what I eat. I also do think computers are great to talk to. Even if you make a chat on your computer on talk to someone call computer speak. It really is alot of fun to try out.:)

I don't know if i would say "I am my computer" but my computer is certainly an extention of me, but thats through no fault of its own, i put the music there, i put the pictures there it wasn't a choice, so its more of an extention really (like putting rings on your fingers)

my computer is like my car. it has a name called bitch everytime the damn thing doesnt do what i tell it or direct it to do. as for it being anything like me, naaaaaa no way. it would constantly be crashing.

Even though your computer doesn't have AI, some people, myself included, feel a connection to it. Maybe because of the personalization, it's an extension of your personality, mood, etc.

Computers are far from having a conscience.

A conscience means that it could think on its own.

The only thing a computer can do is what you tell it to do.

They are simply tools. Like a hammer, or piano.

It is an interface. Nothing more.

The only thing my computer resembles me in is it's ridiculously unorganized format.

I've got files and shit all over the place, my desktops a mess...

I do believe in some ways a computer can be an extension of yourself.

For instance when I'm entranced in a video game and am using the interface to basically do all things that are happening in the game, it's quite interesting to know how dazed and focused one can be on something such as that.

At some points you don't really pay attention to anything outside the screen, it's euphoric, dangerously at times.

I feel as if my computer is a tool, however, I would never say that I am attached to it. It is simply a tool, if I were able to get a better one, I wouldn't feel bad about throwing this one in the trash.

Unlike a pet. A pet can't be replaced, you have a pet and that pet displays a personality and gives itself merit to you and when it passes away it cannot be replaced, not even with one that is identical in appearance.

A computer however, is not alive, it has no personality and does not give any sort of merit, it is a tool and should be treated as such.

Some people have certain interactions on computers so often that their minds become conditioned to the stimulations they receive when on the computer so much that simply seeying it or touching it brings that same feeling back again.

For some that may be the feeling or sensation of talking to friends online, or perhaps the feelings of exiliration from playing games.

I would suggest that I've had these "feelings" not so much when I'm looking or on the computer, but more as an urge.

Somtimes I'll be more inclined to play one game than another , or speak to one person than another, because of some innate nostalgia that portends to that person or game. (I'm not attempting to juxtapose people to games, this is simply an example of an urge to do a specific thing, which would be an interaction in this case, be it with a game or a person or anything else)

It's intersting however, how much we put into our computers, how much information they hold about us, about our lives and ours secrets.

All the information that passes through them, onto the world wide web, or from the net into it and then to us.

I am very interested in the future of computing, with the way it's evolving today it is possible that in the future our computers may have better ways of being customized.

Perhaps someday computers will not be replacable, perhaps they will, as pets do, make a mark on us, and make us feel as if that particular computer was special and irreplaceable.

Only time can tell.

I do not believe that my computer is an extention of me. It does what the programs I have put on it tell it to do. It is just a tool to me to be able to speak to people that are not right here with me and to voice my opinions on boards. If I had to say that my computer was an extension of me, I would definately have to get a better computer. This one sucks but suits its purpose for now until I can afford to upgrade.

A pentium 4 cant do much more than a .386, a computer with Pentium 4 processor is just capable to host more and better programs. and can have that done more efficient.

like the letter A. when I type it. The computer recieves signals like this. where 1 is power on and 0 power off. 11011001 10001111 00010011... these codes are built up in 8's where it is built up like this...

Action potentials (the means of communicating between neurons) in the nervous system operate largely on an all-or-nothing principles 0/1, and in some cases in degrees. In any case, advanced computers should be able to simulate the human brain because of this. However, we will have a huge computer doing what a brain can do in a small space. What's the point?

Not necissarily. A processor does not have to be large, it simply has to be cold.

The things that make computers "think" are processors, they're usually very small chips that simply pull the binary equations sent to them, out as fast as possible.

The problem is that they overheat, this is why your computer has a fan and a heatsink and all that fancy shmancy stuff.

Advancec computers could have multiple processors in a very small place that could in fact have just as many gigaflops as juxtatposed to a human brain.

The problem is that these processors would need to be made out of materials that do not change shape under high temperatures, and that can be cooled by practicle means.

There are some new processors comming out in the next few years that will be pretty close to acheiving this.

Nevertheless this doesn't mean that your computer will be able to have a personality or be "like" you.

This simply means that it will be able to answer a series of queries as fast as the human brain.

Now all we'll need after that is a very complex code that could somehow adapt to it's environment and change. Basically a "learning" code.. AI.

What I meant was, to replicate a brain, one would have to replicate all of the brains interfacing neurons, or at least the ganglia/nuclei, which would result in a complete 'computer' much larger the size of a brain, because we can't create processors that small that can communicate with other processors in an adequate fashion.

Still, even completing the puzzle won't be much help. The information stored in each cell, each neuron by DNA is enormous.

Correct. But how cold? What is the "sweet spot" in the range for today's computers?
I'm curious: Could a computer of any kind work at millikelvin temperatures, and would it be efficient?

To my knowledge there were four companys in Arizona that had been trying to develope this technology since the early '90s. The main problem is funding. The burn rate for these companies was one billion dollars. A year. Each. In '01 there was a lot of talk and rumor that one of the companys had made some sort of discovery and did in fact have a fully funtioning quantum computer. No idea if this is true or not, but I wouldnt be surprised either way.

guys dont you get it?for example lets look at the internet,the internet has AI.when you type in somethin on a search engine,it asks it self what does it mean.then it locates sites with that particular topic.and as more advaced search engines arive better AI is.and as the computer is thinking comes more questons to understand the topic better so it scans data and solves the question.so yes in a way our computers are intelagent and evolving.mebe even a mind of its own...
