The Matrix

Hello All,
I have a simple question about the first movie. When Cypher made the deal with Smith to hand over Morpheus, how was he in The Matrix without any of his crew knowing about it. If you remember he was at a restaraunt eating the steak talking about how he knows it's not real, but what is? Whenever any member of thew crew logged on to the Matrix Tank was always monitoring. I just went back and watched the first movie before I went to see Reloaded and this question won't leave my mind. If anyone has an answer, please let me know. Thanks much!

this same EXACT question was asked like a day ago in another thread.

two possibilities.

1. you don't need an operator, you can just set up a timer to make a call and get you back, and cypher did this while everyone was sleeping, remember how neo was the only one up besides cypher.

2. he never entered the matrix. mwa ha ha, think about it. he doesn't see lines of code, he just sees what happens in the matrix, so perhaps what we were watching was a symbolic representation of his communication with agent smith from the operator terminal.

Well, we can rule out possiblitie number 2 because how could he eat steak and drink wine from the operators terminal??
