jibberjabber A lot was said in M2 about purpose. Can someone clarify this? Atari that stuff's transcribed on here somewhere...... Araxis Basically, when Neo jumped into Smith, some of their code got copied to eachother, and Smith had this will to be individual and to defy authority. This revoked his priveleges of being an Agent, and he no longer had a purpose. He was pissed he didn't have purpose, so he wanted to take purpose from the person who took it from him: Neo. Because (like Atari said, the speech is someone on here) Smith had said without purpose there is no reason to be here. john_galt Purpose, choice, and free will are definitely important themes in M2. I have a theory that, in actuality, the only two people in the entire Matrix universe that have free will at the moment are Neo and Smith. I think that free-will, the ability to choose is the "anomaly" the architect is trying to control in his construct of the Matrix. Neo has welcomed the ability to choose, and he demonstrates it -- in the first movie he doesn't truly "become" the One until he makes a choice, that choice being to free Morpheus in spite of impossible odds. Because he can choose, he can affect the Matrix. Smith is not embracing choice as "well" as Neo, because as a previous program agent, he is "used" to doing as he is told -- following his purpose, as he would say. He is very upset that Neo has removed this purpose from Smith's life, because now he does not feel that he has any meaning -- though he benefits from being "unplugged" from the current Matrix because he can make his own decisions and he exhibits some new abilities -- just like Neo exhibited new abilities after he made his choice. As I have said in one other post, (and I may be totally off), all of this "smacks" so much of Biblical themes that it is pretty hard to ignore. Araxis You made many references to people having a choice-- No one made any choices, because they had already chosen. They just had to figure out why. :) On a serious note, the Smith information is correct, and well-put. 1_Morpheus thanks you guys for clearing that up this thread helped me further understand the movie(low on cash so am only seeing it in theatres once) nychulo3 A major theme in M2 was the whole concept of we are all here for a purpose and that is what we are here to do. We see this spoken about by the Oracle, Smith, and the Keymaker. The keymaker said it best when Morpheus fell off of the truck and the agent confronted him. The keymaker said "We are all here to do what we are meant to do". And when the keymaker died he said again, I served my purpose, this was meant to happen. I think Neo and Smith face off because because they are two people who purpose has change from what it should have been. Smith's purpose was an Agent, and Neo changed that. Neo's purpose I believe was to restart Zion, and by him choosing the left door instead of right, he changed his purpose, and in turn they are both trying to take over the Matrix. john_galt I believe that Neo has finally made a true choice by walking through that door -- and he was only able to do so because of love honestly, or to be more specific, he was able to make the "right" choice because of his love for Trinity. I believe that Neo is the first entity in the entire Matrix (or Matrices, since I believe there is more than one) that has been able to truly love while being able to make choices, which is exactly why "this" Neo is unique, because he now can truly make a choice, or demonstrate free will -- and the architect knows this. In fact, I think that the architect is really only trying to do one of two things, I haven't figured out which one yet and would appreciate y'all's (sure, it's a word) thoughts: 1) The architect truly is a sterile, logical, precise machine, and he is simply trying to create a mathematcially precise, sterile, and automated world. We heard Smith talk in M1 about the fact that "current" Matrix is not the first one, because the first one was so utopian that human minds rejected it. This is the architect's sixth attempt to create that perfect world, and each time there has been an anomaly -- and that anomaly is someone who can choose, the One, Neo. Neo has some degree of free will, and that mucks up the architect's plans, but the architect has "protected" his creation by controlling Neo enough in the previous 5 Matricies that Neo always returns to the source and allows the architect to "re-boot" (create Zion again, etc) -- Neo allows this because, the previous 5 times, he chose the other door. This sounds like a pretty good theory if you want to stay completely in the realm of the Matrix storyline. But I kinda like the following theory because, like many interesting and profound things, it smacks of theology: 2) The architect (or someone) is actually trying to create a real human being. I have a theory that NOT A SINGLE person we have met so far in the Matrix is actually what you and I think of as a human, not totally -- because I have a theory like many of you that Zion, where we "think the real humans are", is actually itself in another Matrix. If the architect, for whatever reason (haven't figured that out yet) is simply trying to create or DUPLICATE humanity, he has failed in the previous 5 attempts beause none of the previous free-will agents (that is, Neo) made a purely "illogical and unreasonable choice" based solely on their love for another. But Neo just did in M2, for the first time. And the architect knows this, because when Neo says, "You better hope we don't meet again," the architect says, "We won't", because he knows that Neo has reached the next level of creation so to speak-- so he will not have to come back to the source any more. Neo is now a human who has both the ability to choose (free will) and the ability to love. I can't think of a more apt definition of the two most intriguing aspects of humanity than choice and love. IF, (and I'm not saying I do, yet) you want to equate the architect with God, this theory is very similar in theme to the Biblical idea that God put a little bit of Himself in us, which is why we can think, reason, feel, and of course, love. And, just for fun, don't forget -- according to the Bible it took God six days to create the world (7th He rested). I find it very interesting that this Matrix is the 6th one according to the architect. Fun to think about, anyway! :-) Araxis And, just for fun, don't forget -- according to the Bible it took God six days to create the world (7th He rested). I find it very interesting that this Matrix is the 6th one according to the architect. Awesome point! Never even considered that in the least bit. This may give us new insight as to what happens in Revolutions. the_two this might sound like im stupid, but whats a agent, and wahts its purpose in the matrix? plz help me understand this Helix The agents are the guys in the black suits. They are programs designed by the AIs that are supposed to keep order in the Matrix and stop the rebels from getting other people freed. the_two you mean morpheus and the other guys are rebels? Araxis In a sense....they don't accept the Matrix; they don't want to be in it. the_two and whats an ai (i never really got the matrix and i just saw m2) Araxis AI = Artificial Intelligence. Go watch The Matrix before you ask any other questions. It's way too detailed to fully explain. nychulo3 Well he is sayin he saw the Matrix just never understood it. But in order to understand the deep underlying themes, you really have to understand the simple and obvious. Try to watch Matrix again, since u seen M2 and see if u understand it at all a lil better now. the_two yah i think ill just rent the matrix on dvd- and the matrix 2 when it comes out. -just because im getting started on these forums- how do you make those quotes on the bottom of the reply under the line? just wanna no Sammaelx9 Jon, just as possibly more credit to your second thought. I am not 100% sure on this becuase I can't remember but many places on the site seem to say that there were 6 before current Neo and he is actualy the 7th. Which would totaly tie in with your theory. john_galt Thanks, Sammaelx9. The fun and easy thing about posting theories (which is pretty much all I've done) about fictional movies is that the Warchawski (forgive spelling) brothers are really the only ones who can honestly trash what I'm saying -- they know how it all ends! Lucky guys... I'm just throwing stuff out there to see what comes back... mariner many places on the site seem to say that there were 6 before current Neo and he is actualy the 7th According to the architect Neo is the 6th One: Architect: The matrix is older than you know. I prefer counting from the emergence of one integral anomaly to the emergence of the next in which case this is the 6th version. But if this is the 6th Neo, it is the 7th Matrix. (Remember the first Matrix had no anomaly but was an utter failure.) Of course this messes up the theological connection, because the architect is working on the seventh instead of resting. :) View Full Version : Purpose--How does it go? |
