EMP for real?

I just saw this thing on tv about how a new technology is being built using electronic pulse signals from a police car or police helicopter to disable engines on cars in police chases. it sounds just like the emp in the matrix movies!

It is real, in fact tha it has been around for a while. the wachowskis just took that idea and ran with it. Although emps are still under research, in the next couple of years they could be used much like they were in the matrix.

There is nothing special or new about EMPs. Their existance has been known for a long time. All new military eloctronic devices have shielding to protect against them. And yes, they are/have developed devices small enuff to carry that will generate a small EMP. Go spend $50 at Radio Shack and u will be able to generate one big enuff to fry your comp if the device is right next to it.

Yeah i would guess the only reason you dont see cops using them is they would prolly fry there engine too

Enginesa are replaceable... except Ferrarri's and Afla Romaeos...

Any electrical device can be shielded against EMP damage. If the cops wnat to blow the money on the technology, then I doubt they would have a problem blowing more money on shielding. Its cheaper than a new brain box for your car anyway.

like Shinigami said there is nothing new or special about emp early experimintation started in the mid 60's and now is a fully functional project two facilities one based in alaska and the other in antartica they are called the HAARP and SHAARP project, they create electrical surges through the magnetic field and ionospere that can come within half a mile of the target while still somewhat inaccurate its existence is clearly evident. more info of these facilities can be found at http://www.earthpulse.com/haarp/background.html

I KNEW ABOUT EMPS QUITE ABIT AGO CAUSE WHEN I SAW THE MATRIX I KNEW STRAIGHT AWAY WHAT THEY WERE ON ABOUT BEFORE TRINITY TOLD NEO WHAT IT MEANT IT IS KINDA HANDY FOR SOME CASES BUT NOT COMPLETELY.

Are you serious? EMP was first used in the 40's. Scientists found that by detonating an atomic weapon up in atmosphere above a target it emits an EMP wave that will disable all of the enemy's communication, but no casualties or radiation.

Accuatly if they use the wrong type (i think) of material, like cobalt, they would kill every living organism on the planet except roaches... this is because the high yeild radiation doesnt disapate before it hits ground (like with certain nuclear weapons its low yeild radiation that affects people but prolonged exposure to it causes cancer but not immeadiate death, high yeild is the **** that causes your cells to go cancerous while they are delivering stuff)

that isnt EMP though, that radiational techniques...

EMP is actually real, as i am sure others have already said, its actually an electrical pulse that goes from particle to particle in the air and through metal conductors! it can temporarily or permanently disable anything systemically based with a 'brain' eg. computers have processors, and anything that has a processing unit or such like is a system with a brain..

EMP can also harm humans with pace makers, or very high electrical currents with-in the body, because muscles, tedons, the heart and the brain etc all use electrical currents to communicate and work...

EMP is very dangerous, but not sure about the radiation factor, for all electrical appliances have a certain amount of radiation...

depending on the yeild of the weapon like todays nuclear weapons for example of 50 meagatons and up, it would knock out not only enemy communications but 90% of all electronics in a hemisphrere of the globe, nothing this drastic ever happened during the 40-70's testing because weapons werent that powerful yet they were still being measured in kilotons (100 kilotons=1 meagaton) in fact the hiroshima and nagisaki bombs were only 0.5 and 0.7, very weak in comparison but still they flattened cities.

What are you getting at? I didn't say that the first atomic weapons were powerful I said that if you detonate them above an enemy position (at what height depends on the power of the bomb) an EMP wave is released that destroys or knocks out electronic equipment.

Well, you do have those handy boomers, they just emp, without any radiation.. I have to get me one of those...

there are things you can buy like that but they only work on cell phones and communication lines within 100 meter radius,

They used an emp in the remake of Ocean's Eleven, to black out Vegas. They called it a "pinch"

this technology is not new at all, an inventor named Nicola Tesla anyone heard of him he invented AC power, the first laser and a hundred other things, but anyway he came out with the idea around 90+ years ago but he never followed through the project was picked backup about 1968 by the military where tesla stopped about 40 years ago and it already exist now its called the HAARP project(based in alaska) it invloves building up a strong electrical current and then sending that surge of 3.6 Gigawatts of energy through the magnetospere to reach the target creating an effective EMP without damage to freindly targets, but building up enough energy to create effective EMP could never be put into somethinmg as small as police helicopter or even a van.

Do a google search on handheld EMP generators. You can get an schematic to build a hand held EMP device with enough power to take down a computer, car, or even a fairly large electronic device like a Server. They operate of a Coil gun like system. A charging unit form a disposable camera and a large inductor. I was going to build one but never got around to it.

Quick note: Most of these schmatics cost around $5 but some are free.

what good can a EMP grenade or bomb do ?

Not a bomb, a rechargable box that directs a beam of EMP pulses. It doesin't have a real pourpose. Just for fun I guess.

I have heard about that. My dad always tells my about those types of bombs. Because he used to be in the military so he knows alot about weapons and bombs and that type of stuff. He is also very good in computers and he can hack on stuff. Even though he has done that a few times so that he could get information about what the hacker took from his computer. But that is pratically all.

The weapon that was in "2F2F" is actually used. And yes, it is very lame.
