agent gruffy: She told you exactly what you needed to hear, but it's not the full answer. Who did he get the ability to multiply.
I think he got this ability , because his purpose is to destroy Neo, And then he rewrite his code (or the Merovingian did) and get the ability to multiply, and this ability helps him to do his purpose.

It's my theory, and i'm not sure it's right, but i believe it.
My name_is Neo

I thought in Reloaded they said something about him being a rogue program. But if there's no other explanation than that, why haven't the twins spawned?

I don't think the Merovingian rewrote Smith's code because then the Merovingian's men would know that Smith isn't aginst them and they wouldn't try to kill him...

I agree. Merovingian has nothing to do with Smith's ability to reproduce.

Ok I think SullenGiRLFa is right some of neos code did get imprinted on him and he subsequently rewrote some of his code and didn't go to the end of life process like he was supposed to so My name_is Neo hit it on the money when she remarked he was a rogue program. The Oracle talked about that.

But you did here about him after the fight he got into the guy that was trying to finish the mission and get out of the matrix right as he was getting out. So he found a way to get out of the matrix without being unplugged. so he's in that evil guy that tried to stab neo before the boy ran over and gave him the spoon. He's in Zion.

He can probably clone cause they had to think of something to surpass the first movie's originality. Having Neo fight 100 Smiths, in a fight scene that was almost all computer generated, is a pretty novel idea.

There were scenes in Reloaded that seemed like they were just there.. to be there. Smith didn't need to fight Neo after Neo talked to the Oracle, but they put it there for the sole purpose of entertainment.

Remember, it's still Hollywood.

Come on, every scene the Wachowkis wrote has significance

Really? Then what was the significance of the Smith(s) vs Neo fight scene? What was the significance of having a side love-story between Morpheus and Niobe? What was the point in having Persephone kiss Neo, she explained what she needed to, she didn't NEED to kiss him for the story. Why did the keymaker run from Trinity and Morpheus if he knew they were coming to help, to make it so it was a fight scene that built Neo up.

I could go on and on, this isn't a religion, it's a movie. Movies are made for money, and in order for that movie to be successful it must appeal to it's audience in a few different ways. If there was no action at all in Reloaded, and only telling about history of "the war" or something, would the average movie goer who isn't a fan of The Matrix go see it? No.

If you think the Wachowski brothers made this movie entirely for Matrix fans, you're very ignorant.

You are right, but some of the things have a reason.
Maybe the rave scene was pointless, maybe the sex scene was pointless, but the fight scene was neccesery, and the kiss was neccesery. maybe in revolutions we will get answers for what was the reason of those scene, and maybe we not.
BackDoor

I believe it is something very easy to explain.

Some part of Neo's code was exchanged with smith's code. So what we have here is the first mutation of the Machine/Human world.

A mutation as you know is also sometimes caused by exchanged of DNA, this fenomenon is called crossing-over.

So, there is no way of telling what a mutation will give origin to. In this case it originated a new code in Smith (and in Neo), that allows Smith to inprint his code in humans. He does not copy himself, he only changes the consciousness of the target human.

Neo, in exchange got the ability to sence the machines, to feel what they feel. As you can see in the end of M2.

It's an exchange of cerebral information. As a paralel to a exchange of genetic information.

He got his ability when he was freed and probably when Neo flew into him in the end of M1. What fight? In M2? In M3? M1?
