Everyone has mentioned the obvious about the 2 Matrix movies. I have a different spin. I find it hard to believe that humans would be enslaved by AI. Both movies make more sense if Neo and the other rebels are AI life forms who are enslaved by humanity. Human history is littered with its tendency to enslave; should the enslavement of the newly created AI species be any different?
Imagine a computer being given AI, and then realizing that it can exist in an unplugged state. Once unplugged, would it think of itself as human? Now, imagine that Neo and the others in the "baby farms" were merely plugged in computers who are eventually set free by other liberated AI life forms i.e. Neo)
By structuring the first 2 Matrix movies as if "humanity" (making us assume Neo, Trin, Morph are human) is enslaved, the audience wants to pull for "humanity" against the machines who have supposedly enslaved them. If M1 and 2 started with the premise of AI enslaved machines (NEO and others) vs. humanity, I don't think the story wouldv'e sold as well.
Hence, I believe that it's possible that the W bro's have fooled all of us; Neo and frinds are AI unplugged; they will rise up and defeat the Matrix, which has been created by humanity, not the machines, to keep AI in check; some sort of truce between AI and humanity will happen in the end.
The architect tells Neo he is "human" to confuse and control him. Neo , in the "real world" has plugs. Only machines have plugs.
