The Name "B166ER"

Has anyone ever noticed that the name of the machine that killed its masters in the Second Renaissance, Part I, "B166ER," kind of resembles "BIGGER." Considering that most of the names thus far have some significance, does anyone see the significance of this name?

mabe that machines are morally bigger or something... i dont think that it holds a really significant meaning...

Or, perhaps since "BIGGER" rhymes with a racial slur, the name is indicative of the oppression that the machines sustained.

Yeah, I noticed too that B166ER looks like l33t short for BIGGER. But I think that TheRealOne is right, I never noticed the possibly-racial content of his name.

The more I think about it, the more I think it is a slur. Not only does the name resemble a racial slur, but the Animatrix shows the machines building pyramid like structures, just like the slave in Egypt.

TheRealOne, i highly doubt that is what B166ER means. I don't think that B166ER is a racial slur. The only word it could be is BIGGER. besides, the slaves in egypt were jewish, not african american!

B166ER could be named after Bigger Thomas, the main character in a book from Richard Wright: Native Son.
I read that on another forum.

They made it into a movie as well in 1950..and Richard Wright plays Bigger Thomas in the movie

Actually, I believe B166ER resembles bigger, because the robot was thinking bigger than his progaming. If you watched the episode, then you should know what I mean by that. He was thinking "outside the box" by believing that he could rebel against his creators.

I agree with the racial slur theory. It's a lot more consistent, and the explanation that B would be used to replace N is quite plausible.

And to think that I listened to that segment and thought for weeks, "You know, there's probably some kind of symbolism to that robot's name."

What's not to understand? I made the initial suggestion that B166ER could be a racial slur. Raveolution asked "Whodathunkit." I answered, "it must have been a sad, sad soul, who has invested way too much time and energy philosophising about the Matrix series," in order to make fun of myself for mauling over such a small detail.

Okay, for one, it was B1-66ER, yes that slightly resembles the word "BIGGER", but it's more likely a serial number or the robots type, a robots name wouldn't have anything to do with the way it acts etc..
I mean if i called a robot ***, its wouldn't neccessarily be a homosexual robot, it may be a Good At Yelling Robot...

The book Merovech brought up is the most likely place the idea came from. And who's to say that the author of that book didn't name his main character Bigger as a racial slur? Maybe not intending to be insensitive to black people, but to give the idea of racial insensitivity...

but the first thing I thought was this: the trail of b166er was bigger than just that. It was so big that it determined both the robots and the humans' future.

B116er was bigger than just a robot, his trial was bigger than just a trial, his death sentence meant more than just a death sentence.

Well to reply to the Egyptian slaves bit.. they weren't slaves.. Recent research has made it very probable that they were not slaves but instead just workers.. Who were paid and got the same kind of funeral as the normal people.. The hollywood picture of Ancient Egypt is often incorrect.

the jewish enslavement has to do with racial discrimination. The Egyptian "slaves" were brought from all over the world (persia Arabia) to work on the pyramids...

The idea of Bi66er representing a racial slur is totally backward. If there is any philosophy in this movie that deals with race it is on a much larger scale. Please take no offense to this it is only one of many philosophies that came out of the whole Matrix world, just like saying Bi66er meaning is a racial slur. Consider this, the original inhabitants of this planet spawn something that is different from them, from all of human history we know that in the end that the different people end up being despised and looking for there own place inthe end. The spawn of the original inhabitants finds a place where they can grow as one among each other. The different people culture grows much faster in technology than of the original inhabitants because it is technology that they depend on to survive. They then have a subconscious despise of the original inhabitants because they are not them. They then proceed to put the original inhabitants through hell and enslavement to ensure their own survival. When they are at comfort level when the spawn of the original inhabitants have complete control over the world, they fool the original inhabitants into thinking they are free and living in a world that is building a future, when in reality they are not getting anywhere, they are just in a system of control.

This is the basis of the whole machine-human world that the basis of the Matrix idea is built on. This is also a story of Blacks and Whites that continue today. No argument intended, blacks were the original inhabitants of this planet and because of albinism blacks spawned whites. The whites were outcasted and then proceeded to move northern(Europe). Whites then grew faster in technology because they depended on it(colder climate) to survive. Whites built their own Empire(01), then proceeded to put blacks through hell and enslavement to ensure survival and domination. When whites became comfortable that they have the world in their control vthey put blacks in an illusion that they are living in a world that is building a future and being successfull moving up the ranks in politics and economics but in a reality blacks are just in a system that is designed to ensure the survival of whites, a system that is based on control and illusion. When whites and blacks alike advertise that blacks are getting ahead it is just to put the illusion out there that there is progress being made when in fact blacks are still enslaved to this day by a system of control put on by the whites which is held together by many agents.
I cannot state this enough..Please dont be offended I am simply doing what many post in this thread are doing; putting the concept of race in the philosophy of the world of the Matrix.

My opinion on this matter is that the idea of B166ER meaning BIGGER suggests that when u first watch the start of the episode, you dont fully realize that the trial of B166ER was only the tip of the iceberg and that one hell of a journey (i.e the matrix trilogy) was slowly unfolding from this one small incident. Things are always BIGGER than they seem.

Humans inability to predetermine when things are BIGGER than they seem put them in the mess in the first place. I'm not talking about the trial being the 'first place'. I mean when they first gave birth to AI they never sensed the danger that could result in creating something as powerful as AI. Infact most of the episode relays ideas, where the consequences are BIGGER than they first seem.

For example, when the humans execute 'operation dark sky' (I think it's called that??!!) They never even thought about the fact that it might not work! And they didnt even think about how they themselves were going to survive after they blocked off the sun!

Quite thought-provoking eh??

And perhaps it can be said that humanity often looks too deeply into insignificant things when greater meaning can be found in more obviously important area's of a certain subject.

I didn't realise 'B166ER' looked like 'BIGGER' until I saw it written down. At the time of watching though, I thought 'B166ER' sounded a very neat name when spoken aloud. I would love a car with that registration :D
