This is interesting:are the agents all individuals?
This is actually only based on one scene I saw:the burly brawl. I know of course the show makes all agents seem unique and different...but the scene had Smith taking over an agent who was earlier seen as one of the 3 brawling with Neo. Later he was seen in the car chase scene (one of the guys driving the semi besides Johnson) and whacking Trinity around. Wasn't he assimilated? Or was he re-created? Or did he somehow escape the Smith take-over?...
Good point, if he was assimilated by smith he shouldn't have been in the car chase scene. Maybe this was just a mistake.
My impression is that when Smith "took over" the agent, he just assimilated the body the agent was currently inhabiting. The agent just transferred himself to a different host, the same as when an agent is "killed".
Agents are a program, so they could be the same, or different, but Smith is basically the leader.
I suppose when Neo blew Smith up in M1, smith got a glitch in his program and he is able to do what he does.
No Squiddy I didn't mean Smith I meant the guy he assimilated...he didn't look like he escaped the full effects to me...or for that matter he didn't seem changed by the experience. Strange...casting problems, perhaps? I can almost imagine the old, scrawny agents begging for the role jus to appear one last time...
Oh yeah, and as an aside did u know the guy who was assimilated was actually the main role in a low-budget TV sci-fi series Nightman? Now you know!! :D
Hmmm, or maybe there are more agents than we know?
I think that Smith can destroy programs. And if that one agent he destroyed or something, was replaced, why there isn't new Smith?
Or is Smith kind of exile now? And by the way, are there two same programs in Matrix, I mean does the system create new ones before old ones are deleted, even if they decide to become exiles?
This is really an interesting point, but it is an easy one to explain.
All Agents are sentient program indebt to the Matrix, but they are unique and are different from one and another.
In TheMatrix 1 you had Agent Smith, Agent Jones and Agent Brown - although they had the same haircut, suit and glasses, they look different and talk different.
In TheMatrix 2 you had three new Agents (...hmmm, upgrades) namely Agent Thompson, Agent Jackson and Agent Johnson - again they look alike, but are different.
Some of you comment that the Agent who got assimilated during the Burly Brawl later on re-appeared during the highway-scene and when they fought Trinity at the end. I believe that this is not true...
Since The Burly Brawl every time you saw Agents there were only two of them: two Agents in the policecar and the trucks, two Agents who fought Trinity. The third Agent, the one who got assimilated by Smith is nowhere to be found in the rest of the movie,
Agent Thompson is by far the most important Agent, just like Agent Smith was in the first movie, that's why you see him during the entire movie. Therefore it isn't possible that it was Agent Thompson who got assimilated, because you see him in the rest of the movie a couple of times. It must be one of the other two Agents that got assimilated.
I did a little research inside the moviescript of Reloaded and there I found that Agent Jackson got assimilated during the Burly Brawl, and in the rest of the movie you only see Agent Thompson and Agent Johnson.
Some of you believed that it was Thompson who got assimilated and then re-appeared later on, sorry can't blame you because these Agents look almost identical, but it was Jackson who got assimilated.
Woah, thanks for the answer! :) By the way, where I could take a look at those scripts?
...I looked closely at the scenes. It was Jackson who was assimilated, is that right? Well Jackson is the man standing on the right of the scene where the agents face off with Neo(he's the one who said "The Anomaly"). He's a stockier man than Thompson and it shows when he was "assimilated'. He has a distinctive furrowed crease above his eyebrows that Jackson has too:as distinctive as Johnson's line on his forehead and deep jowls around mouth-that's how I recognised him as he beat up Trinity. Also the agents may have been in working in pairs but remember that at the last Trinity scene when she was thrown through a wall and came up with submachine guns drawn a SECOND agent appeared through a door after Jackson ducked...he's Thompson. They're not the same since when Trinity realises she's seriously outnumbered and runs for the window we see Jackson climb though the hole she made in the door and leap after her AFTER we see Thompson fire a few missed rounds from the open door he stands at.
Hee now THAT's hardcore :D

very interesting. I never had thought of that if you had not pointed this out. it makes you wonder... but they seem like individuals to me. I get back to you if I can figure something out.

They do to me too. I guess they are just different versions of the same thing: the Agent program. For example, in the beginning of M2 when Neo takes on the 3 agents, he calls them 'upgrades'. This is obviously because they are better fighters, but also because he can see that they are still basicall agents, just another version. And well done Macleod (my brain hurts a bit though :D)
Er...heh...tks Truth but I dunno what ya said i did right...I didn't say anything abt upgrades or anything...n i'm sorry for the name mix-up. Here lemme break it down some more for u guys! This list has been updated according to movie credits:
Johnson: main guy in my avatar; deep lines down forehead and jowls. Did the "car jump" and then the "agent bullet dodging effect", fought Morpheus on the semi, later drove the same semi to its spectacular destruction
Jackson: guy standing on our respective right; stocky, furrow around brows. Got "assmilated", was on the other semi that crashed, beat Trinity up and fell with her down the building
Thompson: relatively minor. Stood on the left. smallest of them. Smooth features. Was driving in the car wif Jackson when they said "She means nothing" "Find the exile..." Helped apprehend Trinity but merely by firing a few shots.
Phew...
Because I had no idea who was who!
