X-files episode reminded me of Matrix...

Last night an episode of X-files dubbed "Monday" aired.

The synopsis of the show can be read here:
http://www.thexfiles.com/episodes/season6/6x15.html

The story totally reminded me of a mini-matrix and somewhat of the Gnostic theory.

In short review of the episode, its like groundhog's day. Where the same day keeps repeating (matrix reloading, heh) over & over for this one lady named Pam. Only small things change, but the meat of the day remains the same over & over..which is.. Pam's boyfriend (Bernard) tries robbing a bank, who has explosives strapped to his body. He winds up flipping the trigger everytime killing Mulder & Scully and everyone else in the bank. This cycle happens about 5 times in this episode, all with small differences in each cycle.

Pam refers to Mulder as the variable (The One, in a sense) and only he can put an end to the repeatative cycle. In one of the cycles, Pam tells Mulder that 'this is hell, and you're the only one who can change this; something needs to be done right in order to fix the wrong'. She's aware of these repetative cycles unlike anyone else. Mulder is kind of believing her but not fully, and that cycle ends up like all the rest (explosions/everyone dies).

A few more cycles are shown, ending the same way.

Then in the 2nd to last cycle, Mulder & Scully speak of fate and during this convo, Mulder has a feeling of dejavu. Mulder says something to the point of 'I don't like believing in something that I cannot control, I don't believe in fate' ....that really made me think of Neo in M1..ha! Right at the end of this cycle, when Mulder makes his way to the bank, he encounters Pam who tells him Bernard has a bomb strapped to his chest. Mulder is skeptical again, walks into the bank, see's that Scully has Bernard at gunpoint, Mulder whispers repeatedly to himself 'he has a bomb, he has a bomb, he has a bomb'...then BOOM! the guy flips the switch and that cycle ends.

Now in this last cycle, Mulder makes his way to the bank like usual, encounters Pam, he still doesn't remember her, but has a feeling she's right. He calls up Scully for backup telling her to bring Pam into the bank, before he enters the bank. He enters the bank, sees Bernard and his dejavu hits him....he remembers "he's gotta bomb!" .... Bernard hasn't made himself known to the people in the bank that he's going to rob the place. Mulder walks up to Bernard as he stands there writing 'this is a robbery...' on a piece of paper. Mulder puts his gun down on the piece of paper that Berny is writing on. Mulder says something to the point of "I know what you are going to do" "you don't have to do this" etc.. then berny goes for the gun and says this is a robbery to everyone, at that time, Scully busts in, gun drawn, with Pam at her side. Mulder tells Scully to lower her gun or else they will all die....she's gotta confused look on her face...like WTF are you talkin about Mulder! lol... Mulder keeps feeding Bernard info about why he shouldn't be doing this....'your girlfriend keeps living this day over & over' ... Berny can't take it and fires his gun at Mulder....but the girlfriend jumps in front and gets hit. Berny is shocked and just drops to the ground, Mulder handcuffs him. As the girlfriend lays there, dying, she says ... "This never happened before"... that ends the cycle and the episode as well..

Jebulum

"As in a dream it is our own will that unconsciously appears as inexorable objective destiny, everything in it proceeding out of ourselves and each of us being the secret theater manager of our own dreams. So also in reality the great dream which a single essence, the will itself, dreams with us all, our fate may be the product of our inmost selves, of our wills; and we are actually bringing about what seems to be happening to us."

this is attribued to Thomas Mann but it is supposed to be quoted from Schopenhauer who was somewhat a pessimist bouddish (it's really oversimplfied).that's Neo's visions.

quote from agent smith at the beginning of reloaded, when neo fights the 3 agents:
It happened exactly like before.
-well not exactly

this definitively tends to the theory of 'all the matrices before were exactly same'
Neo's Cousin

Yup. The episode when the plant is digesting Mulder and Scully with the yellow amino acid ooze. All the while, they are hallucinating that they are still living a normal life while in reality they are dying. Cool episode. It always reminded me of the Matrix.
Neo's Cousin

Sorry, wrong episode. I was thinking of a different episode. The bank robbery episode was a good one but the digesting plant was more like the Matrix. Check it out...you'll see. Mulder and Scully are trapped in a cave being digested by this plant. However, the plant spores are making them hallucinate (sp) that they are living their lives as usual. Very similar to the Matrix.
