Why is the matrix so popular?

Skitto

Is it because It relates to the fact that people can never do all of what they want to?
or is it something else
Mayhem

It takes together all of the greatest philosophical issues discussed throught the human history and binds them together in a pleasant viewable eye-catching environment. It may sound strange to you , but it is a movie 9 years in the making.

yes....the Wachowski Brothers deserve a medal

How is spaming determined?
Is it determined by the talkability of the post or the or something else? Lol
Curios

I was reading an article about Jorge Luis Borges, about how his short stories were all the more uncanny because it was entirely plausible that they could in fact be true. The popularity of the Matrix, or least the popularity of its mythology resides in the fact that, unlike Star Wars or Lord of the Rings or any of that, the theories are actually applicable *directly* to our own existence, instead of abstractly through whatever Frodo Baggins or Luke Skywalker wants to do in this safe, simulated world.

It's perfectly plausible that people can believe that they exist in a computer simulation because, being permanently surrounded and bombarded by advertisements specifically targetted towards manipulating our subconscious and emotive drives alienates us from our true 'natural' selves.

We already exist in a system of signs (a Matrix?) that permeate our realities, and manipulate our realities to the extent that 'reality' as it existed before no longer does - for instance, why did New Yorkers have to watch television to see those planes fly into the twin towers? Because the filter of mediation endowed the event with a certain something...that certain reality that plain old-fashioned 'reality' can no longer offer.

More reel than real. The Matrix is popular because its pop-philosophizing offers us an escape plan, an expathy box for people disillusioned by the mechanics our reality, a system, a mythological code to explain the increasingly claustrophobic and fragmentary universe around us.

Oh and the action sequences kick ass aswell.
Xvim

Action/fight scenes + the whole human vs. machine dynamic.
Dan Cockeyedog

the only reason y matrix is so pop cuz of ppl like u...have no life
i like da movie but i dont gonin a round talkin bout and makin a
g ay website bout it DAM
toymachine970

well then why are you here...you say you dont go talking about it and stuff....well look what you are doing right now...talking about it...so it looks like you are just contradicting yourself...ass...go find a site that someone actually wants you on
Curios

It's quite perculiar - this absence of life that you talk about Cockeyedog. What is it exactly that makes your life more full? Is it because you aren't willing to discuss art and what I (and many others) believe to be one of the crowning achievements of modern cinema?

Does this absence of discussion somehow make life more livable? Is ignorance bliss?

However inadverant it may be though, you do have a point as regards the popularity of the Matrix. When I saw your message, I thought about something: how this ties in to the empathic (and therefore profitable / successful / popular) nature of the Matrix - When I saw the message, calling discussion about movies 'sad' and appropriating them with the 'absence of life', (saying that talking about a film is tantamount to 'hav[ing] no life") I couldn't help but think about Cipher in the Matrix, chomping his way through that succulent steak in The Matrix, desperate to defer "reality" (discussion / thought) and just enjoy the primal, base processes of 'living' - metaphorically described so eloquently in the film as the Matrix itself.

I'm very proud that we're the reason why the Matrix is so popular, though. I think it has important things to say so, cheers for that.
Skitto

good show old boy, i do say that cockeyedog is a total cretin. Dont you agree?
neo7272003

You need not know the answer.
Skitto

You need not know the answer because the question is unknown as well.
I know the answer but I am afraid it would be incomprehensible to people of the normal I.Q. levels.
I shall tell you the ultimate answer to the ultimate question..... FOURTY- TWO!
mad_bout_matrix

i think the matrix is a popular film because of the plot. you know, that the world is not what it seems.
Manic Velocity

I think it's popular because it's the first singular story to be told through multiple mediums. Movies, animation, music, video games, comic books, etc.

I haven't met one person who doesn't enjoy the Matrix story-line on one level or another.
Skitto

That is a probable truth Manic. But it is not 100% probable, there may be other explainations.
Oraclitect

Every once in a lifetime appears a movie that perfect translates the spirit, hopes, fears and imagination of mankind in his given era.
The Star Wars trilogy appeared in the time where the great potencies were starting the space exploracion, the last frontier.

Look around you, to the world how it is. Computers are EVERYHERE! All our actions, words, our own way of life as to be processed by a computer in one way or the other. And with the breakthrougs in AI the "cenario" is kepping more and more real.
Can you imagine what the world would be right now with no computers?

Can you imagine a movie that more translates the spirit, hopes(?) FEARS and imagination of our time?
That packed with elements of romance/action/filosholipy/religion/fiction and (dark)comedy and you something that appeals to everyone.

just my thoughts, anyway...

PS: Skitto, your avatar as to be the most COOL one i ever saw!
Skitto

Hmm, good thoughts are what you have!
I'm gonna think on it.

PS: Yo like my yin yang?
Jester

That`s becouse of the perfect story, and the exellent fighting scenes! The matrix rules!!
smith1

i think the matrix is so popular because like the movie some people think there is something wrong with the world then after seeing the movie they think how cool it would be if things really were that way any it gives them a scapegote from the real world when things get too tough
Mythus

Well, I think it's because of the kung fu movie constant of a "The One" and a "Prophecy" and such.
neo7272003

Point blank= the story is a part of history and we'll never forget it :)
Skitto

It does seem to represent the life of christ doesn't it?

Matrix= Birth
Reloaded= Life
Revolutions= Death

Neo= Christ
Smith= the Devil
Morpheus= John the Baptist
Trinity= (pretty much like...) Mother Mary
The crew of the Nebudchanezzar= the deciples (Mouse, Switch, Apoc, Dozer, Tank, Cypher (the traitor))

Sorta like that.
smith1

yeah that seems like a good way to put it though i have never thought of it that way. cool thinking skitto

Box Hoy

So. What your saying is that Neo is a redneck.
You're starting to make me think that maybe the Matrix wasn't such a great series after all.
Rednecks.. uhhhh... sick....weirdos
smith1

no box boy the theory is completely hypothetical. No seriousness what so ever. And you should not have such hostility towards rednecks! You could end up being one some day.
Skitto

Box! Don't ever let yourself become an alcoholic and always resist the temptation (if it arises) to inbreed! Those are the main causes for redneckation.:p.
