I posted this in the Lounge, but it didn't get much of a response.

7000+ members? Why does this seem wrong? Interesting Stats on posts/members
Questions:
1) The front page of the forum says there are 7,357 members at the time of posting. Why does the 'members' section say there are only 694 pages of 10 members when 'top 10 posters' is selected?

I calculated 6,939 members. (10 on each page with 9 on the last: (694-1)x10+9).My only answer to this may be that the front page doesn't decrease it's count when users delete accounts/get banned.

2) There are 6,939 to 7,357 users here. Why have only 30.05% of the users made at least one post?

Some stats:
(based on the reported number of users on the front page)
2211 users have posted
30.05% of users have made at least one post

816 member have made more than 5 posts
11.09% of users have made more than 5 posts

562 users have posted more than 10 posts.
07.64% of users have made more than 10 posts

197 users have posted at least 50 posts
02.68% of users have made than 50 posts

(percentages will be roughly 0.5-1% higher if using the figure of 6,939 users)

A comment was made that users may possibly end up with the same avatar due to the 6,939 to 7,357 members; however, please realize that less than 200 users actually currently qualify for customized avatars. Also note that this figure will rise with time.

Thank you for your time.

Wow, thats pretty pathetic if they dont even post once..

Agreed. And I came up with the same stats as Secondchld. However, before we go hiting the delete button, we should give some a chance. Some give me pms as to feeling intimidated on posting (god knows why), so if we delete them they won't come back me thinks.

yeah some ppl have 0 posts and some ppl when they do post its still 0 post...they obviously are not needed
Luc

i've considered this but after checking out the access logs for
some of the inactive users i realized that quite a few of
them actually come here a few times per weeek.

i'm guessing a lot of people just like to read since they're
not posting.

also, i've noticed that once in a while the inactive users who
have been here for months get hit with some idea and
start posting. there are quite a few people here who
signed up months ago and just recently started to post.

thanks for the suggestion guys!

freeyourmind

yeah, these forums are also for reading, not just for posting.
Why should users be deleted, anyway? Do they make anything go slower or worsen the quality? Seriously asking.
TheDrakemaster

Well, it's fine the way it is in my opinion and it would be kind of rude to kick some people out, while they're maybe just waiting to get to know the boards better before posting (as Luc mentioned).
SecondChld

I agree. If they're reading, then let them stay. I think there should be a "last logged in" column as well. Seriously though, I doubt the 75% of users are just logging in and reading. I'd say, if they haven't logged in in 2-3 months, they're gone.

i get alotta pms from nOObs saying that they are intimidated to post, mostly because of the nOOb flaming thing u get on other forums (thankfully that is not here)
Jetfire

You get PM's from them? Unlucky!!!! :)

if u look at the memeber part of the site theres ben about 50-100 people that registered with something to do with neo that never post i think whats the point of joining if ur not gonna post.

Maybe it's the attitude some people have against people asking a question for the first time. Sometimes they ask something that has been asked before and get jumped on by some people who have been here for a while. Someone comes on and says 'hi everyone' in the There is no Spoon forum. Yeah wrong forum, so what. Sometimes people here should think a bit more about what they're talking about instead of running to the moral highground. All of a sudden they're yelling SPAM! SPAM! SPAM! (most of the time, they are the people who are the worst spammers themselves).

We all were newbies here once. I know I was and I know I had to overcome a certain level of confidence to post my first message. I hate it how people with a postcount next to nothing start talking about how and what newbies should do. If people become a member to this site and decide to hold of posting for a while or even not post at all, that's their prerogative.

After seeing a number of people being squashed on their first post (even if they made a mistake), I'd think twice myself before I decide to post anything too. Something to think about maybe?

And so what if some people used a nick with 'neo' in it. Does that mean they *have* to post something on here? Is there some secret rule I missed or something?

Sorry if I sound aggrevated, but I really want to nip this elitist behaviour in the butt. i really don't like the 'you are only welcome of you post' attitude.

Thanks for listening :)
funkyhorror

i agree. people needt'lighten up a little bit around here. t'moment someone does anythin' slightly wrong everyone be down their throat like a canon ball through an eneme fort!... in other words, people around these here parts needt'be thinkin' more lightly and not be so harsh in t'judgin'o'people... ... and mosto'all... post count means nothin'! it be t'contento't'post which matters most! arrrrr!

I think the next person to come here and post the MIAM theory, pretending like we should worship them for coming up with it, should be banned

The next time you come up with something I already read on this forum I will do the same to you. I thought my previous post in this thread would have made my point clear on the issue.
Oracle2.0

message recieved Crahan and funkyhorror, but what about the newbies who are just too stupid to use the Support and Questions forum? There are still a couple of those, I'm sure.
