Okay, I have put this thread up because a couple of (well actually a few people) want to vent their spleen about a culture that is obviously emerging across the lounge and unfortunatly spoiling other peoples threads. The emergence of the Punk culture came about in the very early seventies with Bowie and the basic 3 bar beat. Iggy pop was another inovative non-conformist. Without them I feel we wouldn't have had the following-
Sex Pistols
The Ramones
Neds' Atomic Dustbin
Strawberry Switchblade
S. and the Banshees
The Cure
Public Image Limited.
And the list goes on. Alright. Now please no swearing or cursing other members views and ideas on The subject. Please add your comments for this old die hard punk/goth who has lived the culture all her life
love to all and sundry

i dont no ne of those bands but i will look in to them iam have only been goth for 3 yrs and only listened to new music, but i will have get old punk/goth music. It sounds good.
I am glad, you won't be dissapointed. But that is my opinion. I personally can't stand mainstream music and I have been a punk/goth since I was 13, so I am pretty hard to change now. It's been a sweet 21 years for me and I still love the old bands plus the new ones as well. I love listening to the up and comming goths and punks that are in this latest phase of cyber-punk. It rocks. Funkyhorror also I might add has the most wicked taste in everything, music, clothes the works in this field.

*God save the queen, a facist regime.!!!!!!*
Also I would like to add that the culture captures the distain for the negative aspects of fascim and challenges us to be non-conformists. That's how the term 'Dirty Goths' came about.
you forgot the venus in furs mum
agent conner
they are cool, sorry.
Thank you Agent Conner. Yes I forgot them. They actually aren't as old as the ones above, however they do fall into that group yes. Good work, and you keep listening to it too. I know you like to listen to Brittany ( ahhhhhhhhhh ok take a breath it's just a phase he's going though lol) but I respect the fact you have a very wide range of tastes. Now just stand still enough so mummy can get that celtic cross around you neck.
Love and hugs UT
for those that hate mainstream music. What happens when your favourite underground band suddenly gets signed to sonymusic, do you hate them because they will become mainstream?
i wish people just stoped trying to be special and just listend to the music wither its number one on totp or number one on your local radio station.
And the cure in my opinion aren't a band that where inspired. more of a band that inspired. People always assume that because they where the first to do something that it means no one else would have. (im listening to there greatest hits right now lol)
I'm 100% sure that even if the pixies never sang gouge away, nirvana would still exist!
Robert Smiths first inspiration came from listening to Bowie. That is how he remained true after all these years and hasn't sold out. He was asked by Bowie to perform 'we can be heros' at Bowies 50th birthday and Robert nearly died of fright but readily accepted it. It was the most exciting time of his whole life, besides meeting his wife of over 20 yrs, Mary.
The Cure has influenced a number of goth, Indie and punk bands, and sometimes their music did hit the mainstream charts. However, he was never impressed with that fact and has stated so on many occasions.

The reason why Nirvana doesn't exist anymore is because a total cow called Courtney Love drove her husband to shoot himself in the head. And Nirvana were actually inspired by the king of the grunge movement, Neil Young.
Any more questions????
kodell
Thanks kodell you beat me to it.
Yes and btw drain, I love your new bloodflowers avatar.

The insperation for smells like teen spirit was gouge away by the pixies. Courtney wasn't responsible for kurts death. He was just a very unhappy man!
However, I would be depressed too if I was married to her. She didn't help in the equation Drain, btw, your av with your name on it is in multi-media, although I dig that bloodflower hun. Unreal.

I've been checking out some of the tracks from the artists listed...frickin' good so far!! :)
I am so glad I could be of help. Those listed above are just my favourites. There are a heck of alot more than that.

It's really weird cos as a youngster I used to listen to The Cult but never categorised them as Goth.....couple of fave tracks, Wildflower and Sweet Soul Sister which are both going back quite a bit now!!
Yes The Cult definatly are Gothic. And yes they are an old band, but one that has outstood the test of time.
UT
The Cure is a group that I still like and listen to and yet I had no idea that they were goth. I thought Robert Smith looked a bit dark but I didn't think he fell into the goth category...
Robert Smith would rather be known as Indie more than mainstream, however he hates notoriety from the mainstream charts it has been unavoidable because his music is very melodic and catchy. But yes he is gothic.

i don't listen to music by category... i just listen to music... out of all those bands you listed UT, i only know of a few of them, hehe :D
a good cyber goth type band is Dead Inside the Chrysalis... shameless promotion... but they rock! *cough* www.deadinside.com *cough* :)

I have heard and listened to DITC and I love them. They just can't really be put into any genre really. Just great freaking music.

I've heard a lot about the next group I'm gonna mention. Some say he's Goth and others say it's industrial sounds. But one group I love to the point of having all their albums is NIN. What are other views on this. Goth or industrial??

Come again???
I like to think of Claire Voyant as Indie if anything and thanks Sullen I had forgot all about her (aint I bad).
As for Nine Inch Nails I would put them under the Alternative rock genre, however, they have hit the mainstream, but so has manson.
Drain asked the question before " for those that hate mainstream music. What happens when your favourite underground band suddenly gets signed to sonymusic, do you hate them because they will become mainstream?"
Not in the least. It happens once in a while, sometimes I feel abit dissapointed about it. But sometimes I guess you can look at it in another way and say well that's great, good on them. Sometimes the only time they can get notoriety is when they are in the charts, so I just accept it.
UT
-for forgetten about Claire Voyant...i mean I think their (yes plural, they are a band) music is dark wave or dark something
