Let me give you somthing to think about.
"The french guy" as you put it is a computer programme.
Neo is trying to destroy the matrix.
If Neo wins then the french guy will die and I dont think he wants it.

The french guy is a program but were not sufre what his purpose is.

The Marrovingian (French Guy) is trying to stop Neo from saving Zion and going through the door made of light. He is a program doing something he's not supposed to be doing. If you get what I'm saying. It's as if they are all out to try and stop Neo. Whether they have a purpose or not. Basically the programs (Agents, Marrovingians etc..) are all in on the destruction of Zion. It's like a pattern. They keep doing it. But this time something happens and breaks that pattern. They don't like that so they are doing everything they can to prevent Zions survival. Meaning if they keep the Key Maker away from Neo and company, then they cannot get the key to open the door made of light. Without the key they are stuck. And therefore there is no hope for them. This may sound confusing but it's a simple enough way of putting it. Basically they are trying to prevent an attack on Zion and win the war, but the Marrovingian had what they needed. Which now looked like it was only used to say Trinity. A waste, but now they have to fight human vs Machine. Basically the Agents etc... are trying to say there own butts from annihilation.
