Purpose of The Merovingian

I was just thinking, other than holding the keymaker what is the pupose of the Merovingian, other than collecting "interesting" programs.

he's there for a laugh, and to give us some foreshadowing to the meeting with the architect.

I think he's there to show what happens with exiled programs. They live as maffiosi in the matrix, taking in other exiles under their wing. Just like maffia bosses need to watch out for the cops, these exiles have to watch out for the agents. Of course, we learn interesting details from merv like what you can do with food in the matrix (e.g. cake).

we don't actually know if merovingian or persephone is an exile. it's pretty obvious most the thugs with them are, but they may have actually opted to come to the matrix, or may still be serving a purpose there.

I only point this out because the way persephone words it "when we came here", in the bathroom, makes it sound like they may actually have chosen to come to the matrix.

Yes the Oracle describes Merovignian as a dangerous program. You'd think that when the Oracle says he's a dangerous program, his skills would supercede any agent we've come across thus far. Needless to say, he certainly did not give our heros too much cause for concern (kind of a let down if you ask me).

But what is Merovignian? He defnied himself as a trafficker of information.

He has the place wired with explosives...he's scared of someone getting him. Agents maybe??

The french that he used... he didn't make a joke, or even say anything, he just strung a bunch of bad words together, and added "idiots that screwed your mother" at the end. The words he used are as follows: The name of god, *****, brothel, idiots that screwed your mother. Saloperies though, that one I've never heard in all my years of French... it's probably a slangy word. None of this reveals much about the character.

His function? Perhaps it is to keep the exiled programs locked away, and under control. Since they have no more purpose to te machines, wouldn't it make sense to have an acceptable jailer?

According to antique mythology Persephone was beautiful young woman. The daughter of Demeter (the goddess of fertility) and Zeus (the supreme god). One day she was kidnap by the Hades (god of the underground - the realm of deceased). Persephone protested but than she understood that Hades is one of the 3 most powerful gods. So she agreed to become his wife and the goddess of his realm.

Merovingian is definitely Hades and he is the god of all programs that are dead. Guys I admire this movie how it could put together the ideas of mythology, Buddhism, Christianity, animism and I don’t know what else.

Maybe in M3 Persephone left the underground and became the good hero because Demeter was missing her daughter very much so she forced Zeus to help her. And Persephone can spend spring and summer on the Earth together with her mother. At that time Demeter is happy and gives fertility to the Earth. But during spring and winter must Persephone go back to the underground and because her mother is sad the whole Earth is said with her.

Love can be viewed as a weakness. I believe Persephone and the Architect use this weakness to protect their child.

The Architect and Persephone need to stop Neo. There are two ways, kill Neo in the real world or place him into a mental prison. They tried to kill Neo in the matrix but, he was resurrected. Killing him in the matrix would be fruitless. What's the next logical step? Enlist someone with access to him in the real world. Bane.

It becomes obvious that Bane can't live up to his chore. The next step is to cut Neo off at the pass......the Keymaker. But who can hold the Keymaker and is able to alter code at will. The Merovingian.
The Merovingian baits Neo to his chateau by holding the key maker. Knowing that Neo will be sent by the Oracle to get the Keymaker, Persephone joins in to help discover Neo's weakness (in the kiss) and use it against him.

In one of the trailers for 'Revolutions' Trinity says 'Give me Neo or we all die right here, right now' and the Merovingian says 'You are willing to die for this man?' So, the Merovingian has him. I doubt it's near the end of the movie when things should be getting fixed.

The Oracle tells Niobe that "Neo's mind and body were separated when he touched the source. He exists in a place between yours and mine."

For The Achitect is the father of the Matrix, and Persephone the Mother. [ I believe ]

The merovingian has the dual purpose of "showing how deep the rabbit hole goes" and providing some added entertainment. His presence, and that of the concept of exiles, demonstrates to the humans that the matrix is far more compex than that of being simply a dreamword. We see the internal struggle that exists between the machines and the ability of these exiles to program around the rules of the matrix, for example the door from the restarant that leads to a mansion "in the mountains." We now see three factions developing: machines, exiles, humans. The exiles are fighting, much the same way the freed humans are, for freedom from the machines. I find this interesting b/c up till now the onlooker would assume that the machines look at the matrix as simply a gigantic simulator (much the way Smith comments on it as being a zoo in the first Matrix). However we now see that the matrix is actually home to some of these machines (programs, exiles, what have you) because while the physical machines, like the sentinels, are the most visible form it is really the machines AI that the humans must fight, like the architect who is not so much a machine but instead a line of code inside a computer.

And of course he gives us a kick-a$$ chase scene ;)
