what is the core network?

after trin and morph and keymaker begin the freeway chase scene, they call link for a way out and he says, 'it's gonna be hard,'' and morpheus goes, 'i know we're in the core network.'

And trinity goes 'you told me to never go on the freeway becuase it's suicide"

I thyink the "core" network might be the original portion of the matrix, or the test patch that is watched over by the machines

and the highway is suicide because there are so many people all probable agents. like when neo walks into a crowd and says Sh*t becasause there are so many people around and that chinese girls mother turns into an agent and drops the shopping bag (LoL)
