Matrix in a Matrix because of Neo's powers outside of the matrix allowing him to stop the sentinals.
Matrix in a Matrix because of Neo's premonitions/the oracle's knowledge of that outside of the matrix, e.g. that Neo is not sleeping.

IMHO, I thought that Zion was just another part of the program. I really don't think it's a Matrix within a Matrix, that just makes it too complex. Zion is just the recycle bin for the people that can't accept the 'real' world.

I just can't see how the W. brothers could make the movie work if zion is part of the matrix.

Once they escape from the zion matrix then how do they know that they are not now in a third matrix? However many times they escape from another 'layer' of the matrix they will still be unable to tell whether or not they are free.

BTW - I'm sorry if this is too confusing but as well as wanting to see what the opinion was over the 'matrix in a matrix' theory but also what the most important reasons were.

It definately seems that the majority of people don't support the matrix in a matrix theory.

Though it [MAIM] explains some unresolved problems (bring on revolutions) like smith/bane becomes clearer and neo stopping the sentinels, it creates more problems than it solves.

People who do think it start coming up with rather random theories about how trinity is an agent and morpheus is a clone of the mother of the matrix and it all starts to gets a little silly.
