just one big question.....

why would the architect give neo the option of saving zion? doesn't he want to keep the matrix under control? he may be destroying this one, but why would he want a city of renegades who are against his plan exist? am i missing something? can someone please fill me in?????

He answers that question in the speach itself - the problem with the current version of the matrix is choice. And since choice is a part of the system, Neo has the choice to choose between the two doors.

But the previous Ones had a choice to either save humanity or go back into the Matrix to try to save Zion. Since they had no attachment to a particular person (read: love for Trinity), it was an easy choice to take the right door and save all the people in the matrix and restart the matrix (and Zion).
