So...Smith sends a copy of himself out of the matrix using Bane as the vessell.
If the real world was, in fact, another matrix, then surely Smith would have realised this and gone about his renegade businesses, including his aborted attempt to assassinate Neo, rather differently.
I'm afraid that 5 years of chatting on instant messengers have rendered my writing skills next to useless, but I think you'll understand my idea. I apologise to anyone that may have made this point already.
I disagree with the MIAM theory because so much time and effort is spent setting up the context that there is the matrix, and then there is the real world. If a MIAM were revealed to the audience, most of the story thus far would have been pretty pointless.
There are many religious parallels throughout the movie. These usually are along the lines of portraying the matrix as heaven, and the real world as hell. Heaven and hell are opposites, not connected. Heaven isn't inside hell and hell isn't inside heaven, they are separate.
ASSUMING Matrix in matrix is the way they go, I think the point at the end of the matrix will be that you never really know if you are in a matrix, if you are - who controls or gains from it, etc.
It would also lead in well to the ONLINE game.
Note that Smith would not know that he's in an outer matrix, he would only know that he's no longer in the matrix he knows of and is accustomed to. Just because he's a program doesn't mean he's all knowing and intune to all matrixes.
Note that Smith only knew that the Matrix was a matrix because he was programmed to police it as an agent. Otherwise he would be walking around just like you or I would.

But in the Matrix (not Xion), when Smith takes control of a person, he morphs into looking like Smith. But in the "outer world", when he takes over Bane, Bane still looks like Bane. Now, obviously if Xion is another Matrix, then it must have different rules, as Neo can't perform the stunts in Xion that he can in the Matrix, but it still seems strange that if Xion is another Matrix, why Smith could take over a body, but not transform the shape.

Well, he wouldn't actually be walking around, because he's a program. The only reason he exists is to fufill his purpose. If he had no purpose, then he would be deleted.
hmm, matrix in a matrix, i do understand on not agreeing, b/c than the means would be pointless, why would all these characters go through great lengths to stop Neo, why would the sentinels dig a whole when its just another form of matrix, why would smith go to another world to kill Neo. It may be just as simple of an idea as, they all dont know...Neo, oracle, arc, no1, thats what makes it intresting. Its like space, space keeps going and its black, but it must eventually stop, but it dosent, regardless of my pitiful analogy, i think the brothers do not want to give out info or hints about the 3rd installment, b/c that would ruin the 3rd and there there wouldnt be forums like this. Im puzzled, and yes i would love to believe that neo is the savior, and has a religious, or atleast a supernatrual feel to it, but the more i think about the more MIM theory becomes llogical. I still believe that the part when thet kid gave him the spoon, that it must either mean, "good luck when u reenter the matrix", or by the way neo, "u can bend the spoon here as well"..I would be dissapointed if they do the MIM theory, unless they pull some great writing, but it would leave a door open for other movies, this could be the next startrek...Or maybe this is NASA's new project on meantal capacity, and in the end some1 wakes up, or a geniuses idea of a new game, either way im there Nov, 5...

Yeh I feel the possibility of them doing something like this, having it so there is no 'real world' ANYWHERE.

My friend, when Smith 'takes over a body', he copies himself on top of them. In the 'real world' they are plugged into the chair, and Smith's mind is transferred into the person's head and overwrites their own (just the same as programs are downloaded into their brain to allow them to pilot helicopters, or hotwire a motorcycle). Being the real world, one can't change their appearance; they are but flesh and blood.
I recommend watching the movie 'Ghost in the Shell', it may give one a better understanding of how this works.
Notions against the MIAM theory

ok if the W Bros do go with the MIAM there is no way they could close the story in one episode. If they make more i would like that, but if they cut it off then they have screwed up there whole oppurunities

well...it depends on whether half the two and a bit hours are filled with pointless (however entertaining) fight scenes !

I agree. I thought that when I first heard that theory. It would take to long to explain another matrix, who was running it , how it works and why. As well as have the whole story of Zion fighting against the machines and all the other stuff.
u could make another movie called the matrix:revalations and then the Matrix:Reruined
The actors when asked if they would return to do another movie if asked. They said no because the stories been told and they said they don't think the Wach. Bros. would do another one and that they meant it to be a trilogy. I also heard that when asked if they were going to do prequals to brothers said no.
look there is no matrix in a matrix in the game the oracle tell niobe that neo can stop the emps becasue his mind is in the matrix and his body is out THere you have it case closed
