After Neo fights the Merovingian's gang, he goes out a wrong door only to find out he is 500 miles from the city. Can anyone offer a plausible explanation for this since there can't be actual distances inside a computer simulation? Just seemed kind of hooky that he had to fly all that way to get to to the highway and pick up Morpheus..

you are getting far to technical for your own good. But i will try to break this down for you in the easiest terms possible so TRY and follow along as best as u can.
Merevingian & company are like the "computer mafia". Everything done by them or seen by them "is not suppossed to be seen" by the public eye. In Merevingians Lair (or home turf) has built in exit programs for emergency escape. (for simularities) like an underground tunnel that cannot be found(just as an example). Merevingian has got all the keys of the keymaker in addition to his own program writing capabilities.
i tried not to be technical and put this as easy as easy can get.
Your reply makes sense but still doesn't answer the question of distance...

like i said. you are getting to technical with the question.
the matrix is a computer program. the matrix is not considered reality (it is only a simulation)
since the matrix is a cpu, anything is possible. my awnsers is the best awnser u will get w/ a question like that.
......and since it is a cpu, DISTANCE is also simulated, and with the right programs (keymaker, merevingian). That distance can be hacked and programs to that certain programs needs. is that a little better?;)
You're overthinking this. The Matrix is a computerbased world. This world is based upon certain rules taken form the real world. When Neo is at The Merovingians castle, he doesnt yet know how to break the rules of the Matrix. He understands a lot of it and is able to break a few (like flying), but some of the rules still apply, such as distance. He learns how to break that one later on (catching Trinity).. but that's a different story.
