The Matrix Online in 2004
Sunday, 18 May 2003

Warner Bros. Studios and Ubi Soft® Entertainment, one of the world's largest video game publishers, will co-publish The Matrix Online, the first massively multiplayer online game based on Warner Bros. Pictures' vastly influential Matrix property.
Under the terms of the worldwide exclusive deal, Ubi Soft will distribute and manage the live game operations of The Matrix Online, while Warner Bros. Studios will oversee all story and content development. Both companies will supervise ongoing game development and marketing activities for the game. Following the beta test in 2003, The Matrix Online is expected to launch in 2004.

Set in a virtual, persistent online universe in which millions of players around the globe can participate, The Matrix Online will feature cutting-edge graphics, real-time martial arts combat and a rich storyline that picks up where The Matrix Revolutions, the third chapter in The Matrix film trilogy, leaves off.

The game is currently being developed for the PC by Monolith Productions, an award-winning independent game developer, and EON Entertainment, the company owned by the Wachowski Brothers, creators of The Matrix trilogy.

"The Wachowski Brothers' vision for The Matrix is one that extends far beyond the theatrical trilogy, and the world they have created is so rich that we've chosen to tell inter-connected Matrix-related stories in multiple mediums," said Joel Silver, producer of the Matrix films. "Our goal in collaborating with Ubi Soft is to create a multiplayer online game that reflects the trilogy's highly stylized storytelling and innovative action, taking fans beyond the boundaries of the movie screen and into a 'persistent world' where they can fully explore the vast realm of the Matrix."

The Matrix Online partnership between Ubi Soft and Warner Bros. Studios provides both companies with a unique opportunity to tap into the enormous worldwide potential of online games, particularly in North America and the growing Asian and European markets.

"The Matrix Online is the perfect property to showcase Warner Bros. Studios' steadily increasing involvement in interactive entertainment, especially in the online space," said Kevin Tsujihara, Executive Vice President, Corporate Business Development and Strategy, Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. "Drawing on our Studio's expertise as one of the world's premiere content providers, The Matrix Online will offer gamers an experience simply not available anywhere else."

"Imagine if the Matrix existed today, if millions of people could enter a simulation so convincing, so real, that they believed it to be an actual place," said Yves Guillemot, President of Ubi Soft Entertainment. "Ubi Soft and Warner Bros. Studios will bring the Matrix universe to life - enabling gamers throughout the world to participate in the continuously evolving world of The Matrix Online."

Released by Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures in 1999, the acclaimed action thriller The Matrix won four Academy Awards, broke Studio records by accumulating over $475 million in worldwide theatrical receipts, and was the first DVD title to sell one million units. To date, The Matrix has accumulated worldwide DVD/VHS sales of $325 million.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will release the highly anticipated second and third chapters in The Matrix trilogy this year: The Matrix Reloaded opens theatrically on May 15, to be followed by The Matrix Revolutions in November. In addition, Warner Home Video will release The Animatrix, a collection of of stunningly visual animated stories that delve further into the mind-bending world of The Matrix and the characters who inhabit it, on DVD and VHS on June 3.

Already one of the top ten online gaming portals worldwide, ubi.com supports all of Ubi Soft's CD-ROM and subscription-based games, including EverQuestTM, the recently-released Shadowbane and the latest game in the Myst series, Uru: Ages Beyond MYST.

there has to be more to it than that, they wouldnt publish that so early if there want more to it.
toymachine970

true...is there any more
TheTruth16

true, the wakowski brothers probably have something up there sleeves
toymachine970

i hope they do, otherwise that would really suck if like #3 was the worst out of them all
CraHan

I read that last night... the game looks promissing as hell, I can hardly wait.
Neo6th

I agree.
IamMorpheus

I bet 3 is going to be the best of them all...It better be lol
The Ghost Twins

It didn't say that they couldn't beat the machinces this game could be built like SWG(Star Wars Galaxies...) were it takes place during the first movie... (SWG takes place during episode 4) and then play on out but extreamly slow until the machines lose... if they really do.. so don't get your hopes up that you know how this ends guys..
Smithmatic

It can't be! Maybe when they say that it goes past the parameters of the matrix triology they mean that it's a different story line not dealing with the trilogy entirely?:(
Rodion

it does say it picks up where Revolutions leaves off, so I don't think it's a prequel type game.

I like the idea of playing the simulation of a simulated world. If the whole matrix in a matrix theory doesn't turn out to be the story arc that we see develop, then all the MIAM believers can still get their fix that way.

:)

I like that Idea too!

I like the concept of the game. You play (plug into the matrix) when you want to and stop (unplug) when you want to. Even when you're unplugged the gameworld persists. Most online RPGs are the same, but what happens with your character in those games when you don't play?? I like how that problem is solved in the new Matrix game. I'm not sure how using bullettime will reflect on other players though. Does it just activate for you? Or if one person activates bullettime, do all players move in slowmo?

Oh well, we'll know in 2004 :p
Luc

why does it suck?

if the matrix was destroyed, all the people living in it would
either be destroyed or would have to be moved to the
real world.

well, if the real world only has room for several thousand
people and if it takes MONTHS to "fix up" (repair muscles, eyes,
etc) of a single person, what good would destroying a matrix do.

Also, think of all the lives that would be destroyed. So many
people (especially older people) would go crazy when they
find out that their entire life, and EVERYTHING they've worked
for was a fake.

Remember when Morpheus said, "We never free a mind once
it reaches a certain age..."? Keep that in mind.

Like I said like SWG Before the END!!! like before neo and trinity during that time and slowly introduce them as very highly intelligent AI LIKE SWG!!! god...
Rodion

maybe you didn't catch it, so I'll quote:

The Matrix Online will feature cutting-edge graphics, real-time martial arts combat and a rich storyline that picks up where The Matrix Revolutions, the third chapter in The Matrix film trilogy, leaves off.

and again, picks up where the third chapter (y'know, Revolutions) leaves off.

and I don't want to hear any "what if these are actually episodes 4-6 being released right now....man that'd be sweet!" theories either.
WRHaxen

Here's an interesting thought: What if the Humans took control of the matrix?

They realize that people would go mad if they knew their whole world was fake, so... they keep it running.
But it wouldn't be as bad.. they wouldnt use the matrix for energy.. just keeping it running to be humane.
another wierd possibility from the infinite realm of the matrix.
flanish

thats a good thought

That would be really cool to see Great thinking

IamMorpheus

flanish

sorry i just wanted to see what it would look like to have my name all the way down the right side of the forum page. right when i was on the last one, like 5 people posted
IamMorpheus

Yeah I tried that too its not that cool though lol
Rodion

Well, I just came up for a possible explanation for how the matrix could be destroyed in the end of the movie, AND still have a matrix game pick up where revolutins leaves off.

Since humans are basically crops now, the fields, or power plants, or whatever you wanna call them that we're imprisoned could each have their own matrix. It's not like underground in Zion, they'd be able to tell if there were other towers with other matrixes, since they can't get too far with all the sentinels above ground. They could take down the one Matrix, save the people inside it, and find that there are still quite a few other power plants running their own Matrix that need to be saved.

Maybe, just an idea anyways,
Agent_Thompson

On gamespy.com they have an interview with the developers at e3. In it they say that the player will choose between being a Zionist (a person that wants to destroy the matrix) or a person that wants to preserve the matrix as it is because they are dependent on it. As for bullet time, it will only be avaliable in missions that a player can choose to undertake. Your skills will also directly correspond with the amount of time you spend in the matrix, i.e. dont stand up to an agent unless your really good.
IamMorpheus

That would be so cool! Id chose Zionist
Agent_Thompson

They also said that you start out with ugly ill fitting clothes, but as your skills develop you will be able to choose cooler outfits. The have a woman thats only job is to design clothes for the game.
