Everything in The Matrix is closely related to epics and religious storys from all over the world. And indeed all the names are strongly related to the same subject.
What would happen if we - "the people of Zion" - made The Matrix to our new religion ?
It seems to me quite interesting how so many peolpe can discuss a film so much - and even disagree on several basic themes, even though we all agree, that the film is FANTASTIC !!!!
Maybe it is its "discussability" that makes it fantastic ?

I think what makes the Matrix so likeable and cultish is how closely it resembles real life in a metaphoric way - and also follows the greatest story of all time - the bible.

Because it's long, boring, and stupid.
And the matrix does not follow the bible, it borrows one or two concepts from it, like it does from many religions.
The storyline of the matrix is brilliantly written by the wachowski brothers because it has so many connection to philosophy and religion. Names, places, and ideas are all connected- you just have to watch out for them.
I wonder what the wachowski brothers believe?
Thatd be interesting to ask them... too bad they are so secretive.

i think the reason for its popularity is that, for me anyway, people kind of touch on the idea in there head that they kind of wish something like that would come true, it makes life itself seem kind of boring
