how do you get it so there are avatars on the side of your screen?

Go to User CP (its in the top right menu) then select Edit Options - at the bottom you can see the avatar selection and how to pick one. If you want to create your own I suggest you look for a post I made here some days ago, search for "How to make my own avatar" and you can read the help I got from other board members...
