what's your altime favourite game?
I'd have to say that mine would be Final Fantasy X, or any of the Final Fantasy games released on PlayStation. Its a very addictive game... and its good to finish...
at the moment i've been playing Kingdom Hearts, and it's actually pretty good...
i like RPG games but i also like strategy games, Age Of Empires II: The Conquerors would have to be my fav one of those...
so how about you? what's your ultimate game?
Well, i'd have to go with the classics first, I spent months playing
these damn things back in the mid 80's and early 90's
- Space Quest 1 (Best) - 5
- Kings Quest
- Police Quest
- Leisure Suit Larry
New stuff
- Unreal Tournament
- Starcraft (most addicitve game ever made).
Hmm, wonder if I missed anything...
hehe, yes, early 90's i was playing... if my memory serves me correct, Navy Seals on atari, and i think Leisure Suit Larry, and good ol' Mario, duck hunt and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the Nintendo...
My favorite FPS game has to be Unreal Tournament. My favorite adventure game has to be a tie between The Space Quest series and Grim Fandango.
I absolutely loved the atmosphere of Grim Fandango. I recently replayed it, unfortunetly the graphics didn't seem as good as I remember them being, but I guess times change.
i gotta say, the new games aren't half as good as the
classics.
the new leisure suit larry (5) didn't make me think much,
same goes for the new kings quest 7 (not really new
but it was on a CD instead of a 5 1/2 disk).
lots of shooting, not enough thinking. Half Life would
be the only exception, made by Sierra of course (although
I hate counter strike).
just another opinion from an old school gamer..
and i played all those classic sierra games on my Apple IIe,
that's when they still used DOS (you had to boot it into
memory from the 5 1/2 inch disk). man, that sure brings
back some good memories.
luc l.
hehe
"back in the day"
i remember playing doom when i was a youngin' and it scared me, haha...
Speaking of the Apple IIe, one of my favorite all time games, which I put into its own grouping, is Leather Godesses of Phobos for my old Apple IIe.
It was a text adventure game where you start out in a bar, and get abducted by the Leather Godesses of Phobos. I played that game for two years, and I never figure out how to beat it.
It had all sorts of cool features like scratch-n-sniff pads that you had to scratch when prompted in game. It was also one of the funniest games I ever played, just thinking about it makes me want to find some emulators and play it again :D
lol. i was never too crazy about text adventure stuff. not enough
imagination i guess, or patience.
the scratch-sniff thing reminds me of the little hint books
you could buy from Sierra for their classics back in the day.
the book would be written in invisible text, and you'd have
a special marker which would only work on a very small
section of the book and then run out.
god, i wish that old beast was still alive. i fried it when
i tried to "upgrade" memory. the macs are nothing compared
to the good old apples.
mmmm.
My favorite all time game: Everquest (not the stupid PS2 one, the original PC online one)
Kingdom Hearts has my attention as well, could be a pretty good game minus the disney characters, i like the idea of an all encompasing(sp?) game though.
~Mag-Z
Oh yeah. Although I've never actually played it I hear Everquest
is a great and addictive game.
Addictive aint the word......its like you need a patch to get off it. I finally quit for half a year, but now im back playing again for 3 months or so...its ridiculous, you hear about people trying to quit playing but they cant, i think i finally got my play time under control though, i only play three times a week now, but for pretty much the whole day.....
~Mag-z
mag, you should post your pic in our new "Member Pictures"
section :)
actually i don't mind the disney theme in kingdom hearts, i thought that would make it really annoying but alas, it is not...
what type of game is this everquest you speak of?
It's an RPG that you can only play online. You're basically in
a city (or cities) with hundreds (maybe thousands) of other
players and you just walk around fighting, selling, stealing
and the usuall people stuff (although your characters range
from people to monsters).
It's basically a society, but in some distant land with monsters
and orges and stuff. Go figure.
Luc L.
wow, those games rock! sounds like something i should get into when i've got the time...
i used to play a game kinda like that online (runescape), the graphics were somewhat crap, but the gameplay was good... was being the word... it just got old... and now its just too over the top... but it was very addictive, i played it hour on end building up my character and such... was much fun...:D
ow, those games rock! sounds like something i should get into when i've got the time...
Don't get into it too much. That game is incredibly addictive.
I know a few people who ruined their lives playing that
stuff. That's part of the reason I never touched it + I don't
like monsters and giants, etc.
Luc L.
well i can control myself... hopefully...
i know of someone who quit school just to play runescape... now that... that is just pathetic:rolleyes:
there is no way a game would get in the way of me having a real life... hehe, well so i hope...
there is no way a game would get in the way of me having a real life
Good to know :)
This other guy I was talking about dropped out of school
and quit his full time job to play it. It's been like that for
2+ years now.
Sad, but it happens.

 wow... thats just... really lame... i don't know how someone could be so consumed in a game...

Heh, it happened to me. I played for almost two years. The game had a "played" counter where it showed you how many days (full 24 hours) you played and I think I had around 178.
The game is very very addictive. I don't suggest trying it, but that's just me.
that's ok though... thats if you didn't cease to exist to the outside world for 178 days straight:confused:
whenever i get a new game i know i'm obsessed with it for a month or so and play it like hell (thats if its a good game) but i dont' let it take over living...
EQ's been going for a good 4 years now, i've been in it since just after beta. My friend turned me on to it and i got hooked. Its a D&D type setting, with all the medevil "Knight in shining armor" type thing, but you can be a whole host of other "professions" Good site to go to would be eq.castersrealm.com or everquestlive.com to get the best info on the game.

how many hours per day to you spend playing it mag?
I was deep into Ultima Online about 5-6 years ago. Awesome game, it was Everquest's predecessor. I would sit down and play it for 6-8 hours and it would feel like 1-2 in the real world. It was mental.
I once tried playing it to see how long I could play, then I would do it again, again. I got to 15.5 hours with only pee or food runs in that. I wanted to hit the 16 hour point, but my eyes couldn't handle it.
I know it sounds lame, I totally agree. It was an addiction though, I swear.
I think people get deep into it because they have boring unsatisfying lives and here they come into a game, work hard for it and now they have a char that can kill some things. Work a little harder, you can kill more, etc. What made UO addictive was you would find one of the thousands of people on the server in the middle of nowhere - and if you wanted to you could attack and attempt to kill them. once killed, you could strip their corpse of any of their goods. Lots of people made a UO career that way being known as being a killer in a certain area.
One day I saw how deep I was in this mess to work hard to improve my online stats, I quit cold turkey. I went back to school, got married, have two kids now. Now that's boosting your real life stats. :)
Now I only play games that don't go past the 5 -6 hour range. Favorite games now are Starcraft and CounterStrike. CS is great in that you get on a server, wait for the next match, and do what you got to do to get the game jones out of your system. Then you leave. Someone else logs in and takes your place.
I hear Battlefield1942 is good too along those lines, never played it though.

That's great man. And you've got to be pretty strong (mentally)
do that because I know many can't just walk away from a
game they've played for a long time and never look at it
again.
We're all happy for you, great success story!
haha, it's no real success. Normal people get married and have kids all the time. :)
But in the game, I was a wheeler/dealer - I had a huge house of stuff from kills I made or things I bought during the long time I was there. I found a site that dealt in selling goods in the game, so much of my motivation was working to gain wealth in the dumb game! :) hehe
I finally got to $1 million gold coins, which was enough to buy a deed to a castle - the ultimate purchase in the game. I think there were only 5 or so castles anywhere on the server so I felt like it would be easier to walk away from the game now that I owned the ultimate part of the game. And it was.
-WC-
Now that you mention the virtual money, it reminds me of all
the people selling "shields", "armor", "weapons" and tons
of other virtual junk for games lke eq on eBay. I've seen
characters sell for as much as $2800.
Pretty crazy stuff!

I think a lot of the addiction is the proggression factor. You work hard to kill things to progress to the next level and once you've got to a certain point why would you throw away all that progression.
Another part of the addiction is getting items. The more stuff you get and the better items you get to make you better.
I personally glad that I quit, no one should get into a game like that.
oh yeah, sometimes more! I remember when the first person put an awesome player/account/all virtual goods on ebay - I can't remember the amount, but it sparked a flood of people doing the same thing. So then there was a flood of real newbies armed with super strong players. These players didn't know the ins and outs or the tactics! I made a killing off those people... ;-)
Then the killing wore at me, so I became a trader/smith/miner. It worked out good, because I was a strong enough to defend myself most times - and a magician to help out when it was needed.

Yeah, I am saddened by the loss of hours I sat playing it, but we learned from it.
I am consoled by the fact that if I didn't do that, I wouldn't have been where I was to meet my present wife and wouldn't have my two kiddos! Kids are great.

I usually play when i have nothing to do, like when my parents are both at work, my sister's allowed to go out, but i have to chill here in case anything happens to her. I'll play for 6 hours maybe? but just for lack of anything better to do. I still get some school work done too, cuz they just implemented Alt+Tab to minimize the screen, which was a Godsent. It sounds like a lot, but 6 hours 3x a week is "Casual Gaming" for EQ....

Sounds like you're not a hardcore addict, which is a good
thing :)
heh, not anymore....there was a time i played 6 hours a day...back when i had no social life whatsoever, now, after quitting for 6 months and coming back, i've learned to play only when i know i cant go out, like when im grounded for whatever reason or when my parents are working. So, yea, i used to be a hardcore addict, then i stopped cuz i knew it was getting out of hand. Now im ok....

It is totally true that people have lost jobs, marriages, many real life things due to games like this.
People not into gaming don't believe that, but it's true.
-WC-
People will say "No, it wasnt cuz of the game" but thats only because they realize how ridiculous it is that something like a marriage or a job was lost because of a computer game. It's totally true, i've seen it. A couple friends on EQ got married (they met in game) and then got divorced because of a fight they had, right in front of everyone in-game. I thought it a little ridiculous, but sometimes people get too into it....
~Mag-Z
People would get married in UO, they would request a gamemaster (I forget what they were called really, but they were UO employees that would help fix bugs or ban people, admins of sorts) to preside over the affair. Then they would get all in line and put everything just so on the ground or wherever.
then when people would come and start killing everyone - they would scream to the gamemaster to stop the killing and help them - but they wouldn't ever stop killing because it was within the rules to attack anyone you wanted at anytime.
So you would get these roving gangs of people that would hear about an upcoming wedding, start a newbie character, get on the server for a day and power up the stats fast to get it to a nearable minimum to kill people - and then crash the party.
The people getting married online didn't understand why the gangs were motivated to kill or disrupt them. The gangs didn't understand why the loving couple wanted to get married online.
It was a mess. ;)
-WC-
Yea, people would get married in EQ too, like in-game wise, but people were usually nice enough not to "train" (bringing crazy amounts of monsters to an area full of people who cant defend against them) the weddings. In some cases people asked the GMs not to let anything spawn in the zone so no one could do anything like that....nowadays people can handle the stuff that would be trained to the wedding, but it just wasnt nice....
~Mag-Z
I understand geeky, nerdy guys like me would play games
like EQ but why would chicks play it?
Getting married in an online game, now THAT'S FUNNY.
i quite runescape cold turkey... i had what most people wanted in the game at the time... the best armour money could buy...
those kinda games can be really fun, but it loses its fun times when it becomes your life...
getting married in a game... now thats pathetic...
one online game i think could be very addictive is Sims Online. its either out or coming out soon...

~Mag-Z
everquest is definatly one of my all time favorites... im not playinit much anymore and i cant stand having to pay monthly.....
they are comin out with a new one 'lords of everquest' and its free, i'll probably look into that
what is it with these games having to pay monthly? its crap
I've been playing games since i can remember and i must say there are some awesome games mentioned here. however, I am a bit disturbed to see only ONE Neverwinter Nights mention and NOT A SINGLE Halo mention. There is nothing like a 12 hour, 16 player XBOX Halo bash. Halo's multiplayer i just too awesome. And what about games like Super Mario 3? or Donkey Kong Country? Both HUGELY sucessfull games, but alas, forgoten, blown away with the sands of time :(
Yes, everyone here has games they thought were awesome on their C-64s or Atari 2800s, but there's just too many awesome games out now that make me forget all about the hours I spent on Bard's Tale or Elite on C-64. :)
I have heard nothing but awesome things about Halo, but I have never had time to try it out.

Nice list!
I agree with you that CS is the computer game that really many, many people like. It's a clever shoot-em game.
-WC-
my favorite is splinter cell cos it is so realistic and i think sam fisher should be brougth into de matrix any 1 agree!!!!
I love the game called SubSpace, but I also play Idlepimps, Metroid Prime, Gradius III, Chronotrigger, and MasterBlaster. Those are my favorite games to play of all time.
yes luc i would have to go with u on unreal tournament thats the most addictive game i have played
My favourite games would probably have to be:
Max Payne, UT, Asteroids (a classic arcade game), Empire Earth, The Sims (I have all of them, apart from Deluxe, Superstar, and Online coz I don't think that's out yet anyway, but I probably won't get it). I'm sure I have other games I can't remember that should also be there. :)
i love the resi evil series, all the final fantasies they are the best ever, but one game i have played recently called primal i must say is incredible, i loved it.
the latest game i am playing is "the thing" and it is really scary little fleshy dog things chasin u in alaska eek!

Very true. My husband used to play Space 24/7 and almost lost out on achieving his cert 4. I was sooo peed off that when I was in hospital pregnant I had to ring the next door neighbour to tell him the baby was coming, and he was like 'cool, just have to wait 15 more seconds before it ticks over'.
Man I went up one side and down the other of him when he made it up to the hospital because I refused to have my waters broken until he was there. And that was PAINFUL.
So his life lesson when I came home from hospital with baby Ewan , was to do the night shift with baby everynite for 5 months and it was the best punishment I could have given him.
Now he is 'emissary' and game tester for the above mentioned online game from hell (AHHHHH die space die.....lol) and a highly respected person on the forum.
Love UT.

Oh god I used to hold 'gamers parties' with that game. I was so addicted to it but I was the pre-kids and marriage era. We would all freak. Another one is Doom and Tomb Raider. They are my all time favourites.
I would go miles for the next hot 'gamers party' with my pc.

oh goid dnt get me started on tomb raider, i just coodnt tear myself away from it
then i found the answer.....final fantasy 9
The Tomb Raider series...
I've just started with Angel of Darkness and it looks good so far...
We have a winner!
(FFX was/is also very good and I liked the Oddworld game/s a lot too)
i liked abe exodus it was so cool how u can smack a lil green man then start a fight :p
ffx was a gr8 game but my fave is 9
My favorite games:
- Enter The Matrix (ya duh!!)
- Counterstike (oldy but goldy)
- No one lives forever 2
- Grand Theft Auto Vice City
- Max Payne
I'm thinking about buying the latest Tombraider too, but I'll have to read some reviews first. The last one I bought was more like an extra set of levels and didn't have any real new features. Angel of Darkness does look like it has a few nice new moves though, which is pretty cool.
AOd does look good, and i read in ps2 mag that they are bringing in another character, some bloke and he will take on most of the action whilst lara does the puzzles. sounds good to me!
I just started playing Angel of Darkness and must say that the feeling is different than with the other Tomb Raider games. The sphere and tone of graphics is different than with the previous ones, that were all with the same atmosphere. So far I like it, but I'm not yet far enough to really make a verdict of the game. I haven't played with the new character yet; all I know is that he's some obscure guy who tends to go to the same places as Lara (to collect the same items?) and likes blowing things up (lol)-->sorry my mistake, it wasn't him who blew the place up. Anyways, thusfar the game remembers me more of Resident Evil than the previous Tomb Raiders. Not cause of zombies or anything; but just cause the tone as I mentioned above and perhaps even the gameplay.
This is ofcourse a first impression and I am rather sure that once I'm used to the new stuff (and controls-->damned) and the first levels are done with it'll be more TombRaider-like than ever. ;)
Besides, my favourite TombRaider is TR5, but I also liked TR3, cause u got to pick which parts u wanted to play first...
