I highly recommend the book, The Age of Spiritual Machines, by Ray Kurzweil. It's very informative on the subject of AI and intelligent machines and also contains many predictions about life withing the next century such as that the physical memory of computers will be a billion times larger and faster than every human brain on earth combined (about a molecule or atom in size). You know, I'll have put my brain into a computer by then therefore making me literally imortal with access to any information I see fit know about through the internet. So anyone will be able to know anything they want instantaneously.
Pretty neat idea ey?

I agree, I think it was Stephen Hawking that said the only way to avoid being found obsolete compared to machines in evolution was to merge ourselves with them. I agree with that point of view too.
That is, assuming we have a chance to get to that point before AI comes to find us the enemy.

I think that AIs are pretty dangerous. If we do start creating real ones we are going to need to use lots and lots of caution. We should have some sort of emergency shut off switch.

good read!
The best series of books I've read so far are the Ender Series and the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy Series. I loved them both! The Hitchikers is hilarious, and Ender's Game is more serious and sci-fi, but its really good.
