Some one may have made a similar post before, but im gunna have a go anyways!
I see Neo and Agent Smith as a kind of Yin and Yang within the matrix. At the end of M1 we see Agent Smith and Neo effectivly kill each other, only for both to return from the dead.
It seems to me that they both bring balance to the Matrix, without either the Matrix would fail!
In M2 the architecht says that everyone in the Matrix needs to have a choice wether they wish to stay in the Matrix or try to escape. So without Neo the choice to escape would not exist as there would be no hope or myth of the One for people to believe in. Therefore there would be no choice or reason to leave the Matrix.
The oposite can be said for Agent Smith. He seeks to destroy Zion and humanity, he sees it as a disease that should be wiped out for good. In M1 he seeks to destroy Zions mainframe, making humans extinct. He seems unaware that Zion is just another form of control and in M2 i trhink he feels cheated by the system and seeks to destroy it as wel as humanity.
So without either there would be no choice there would be no hope to escape and no system keeping contorol. Hence why neither can die within the Matrix as the system would be flawed and people would not accept it.
But in M2 it now seems that the purpose of both has been taken away from them!
Neos purpose was to 'reset' the Matrix, which he failed to do, which has now messed up the loop of the system, i.e wipe out Zion when it becomes a threat, numbers are too great, then start over again.
Agent Smiths purpose was taken away from him by Neo. Smiths purpose was to destroy zions mainframe, but since his enocounter with Neo he seems to now know the truth about Zion and the task of the One, and seeks to still destroy humanity.
Now neither have a purpose within the system of the Matrix and have both evovled to a higher state of conciousnes.
After M2 there is a trailer for M3, which shows Neo and Smith fighting, but it seems like a mitrror image, both hav the same strenght and seem to do exactly the same moves at once.
I think that maybe they mite eventually cancel each other out and they will both simply become nothingness or maybe they will continue to evolve.
It seems like Neo is evolving into a machine as he can now feel them and seem to understand them in the real world.
Smith seems to be becoming more human, he know has a body of flesh and feeling, we see him cutting him self in the real world, a new sensation for him and also another expression of his hatred for 'flesh'.
Just some ideas i collected since watching M2!
