Questions and thoughts of The Matrix Reloaded

CompCode

I’m sorry if I’m going over any old material. I have attempted to look through the threads. I have not played the game and have not seen the trailer for the next sequel.

In M2, the oracle had a message for neo in the form of a physical, apparently electronic device (which wasn’t given close to no attention)… how did a program in the Matrix (the oracle) come up with a physical device in the real world? I think I missed the significance of this.

What do you think is the link between Neo and ex-agent Smith? Neo seemed to have felt Smith coming (when no one else knew he was) when the agents interrupted the meeting in the Matrix. Smith also claimed a special link before summoning his copies to attempt to take over Neos body. Perhaps this link also defines why Smith was not killed, in the form of a miracle, just as Neo came to life after being shot several times in the chest in M1. Perhaps the link, summoning miracles to keep them alive, is due to a similar purpose in the future.

I also note that Neo was not delivered immediately with great capabilities. His confidence and ability to use gifts grew gradually. In the introduction to the real world in M1, his body was weak, barely functioning. After receiving the kung-fu training program, he started by being easily creamed by Morpheus in a practice environment, then by the end of the session, nearly smashing Morpheus’ face into a wooden column. He failed the jump test, a show of his slow (not immediate) growth. In a confrontation with agent Smith, he gained confidence not to run from the agent, had sharpened his fighting skills, and “killed” the body Smith was occupying, then running away with his life. In another confrontation with Smith, he acquired the ability to dodge bullets like the agents, but was still too slow and caught a bullet. In a sharp change, after he was killed by Smith, when he stood up, in an almost immediate process, he saw the Matrix in a different way and understood that he could change it, stopping the bullets from the three agents in front of him in mid air. He continued sharpening his skills of fighting throughout M2. However, he still proved to be developing, as stopping the blade of a sword with his hand resulted in a cut. Fast forwarding to the end of M2, when Neo, as I believe, stopped the sentinels, just as quickly as his realization of the new view and power inside the Matrix, I think he came to the same realization, perhaps a new view and perhaps new realization of power that had in the real world. Although developing his gifts had been a slow process, his realization of certain truths inside the Matrix and outside of the Matrix, regarding his views and powers, were almost immediate, and perhaps this means something important in the next sequel.

Also, in the end of M2, Morpheus said "I dreamed a dream, but now that dream is gone from me", as he watches his ship burn from the explosion of a bomb sentinel. What do you think he dreamed, what do you think the significance of it was? Do you think it is now gone because the prophecy is now broken, because Neo has decided to make a decision that follows a different path than his predecessors, meaning the cycles that has continued for five generations of his predecessors has been broken?

Regarding the question of Smith being able to control his clones, in Linux, when a process (otherwise a program running in memory, and Smith is a program) forks a child process, it becomes the parent and has full access to the memory ranges the child uses. So even though the child process executes and functions on its own, the parent still has control of it. Smith replicating himself could be compared to a buffer or heap overflow, such as in Linux, stepping out of bounds of a buffer (Smith thrusting his hands into the chest of his victim), one is able to overwrite contents of the stack or heap, in memory, and have the program run or operate as you please, in this case duplicating itself and taking control. In Linux, you’d insert shell-code into the heap or stack, have the victim process execute it, and then have complete control over what the process had access to, including its privileges. In the Matrix, Smith is inserting an image of his own code into the victim, receives its privileges, and completely controls it, same scenario as described in Linux.

For the record, I do not believe Zion to be a Matrix that encapsulates the Matrix we already know about.

I’m tired, so I may not have been very clear. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll come back with more questions.

whatever that object was that was given to neo, it did not come from the matrix. it was probably a device for storing the information given to neo. you know, like a new age floppy disk or something along those lines. physical matter isn't transferred.

neo didn't feel smith coming, you can see the surprise on his face, he just lies and says he isn't surprised to see him.

it was always morpheus's dream to pilot a ship, his ship got blown out and he was bummed out lol. pretty simple there.
CompCode

I can't comment on the reply to the first subject matter, but I disagree with the other two. Did you not remember how Neo showed a look of concern on his face during the meeting and left the others (and Trinity asked Neo what was wrong). He left for the door only for it to have been answered before he arrived there. Something drew him to the door, and I don’t think he needed a potty break. No one was aware of whatever it was that drew Neo's attention from the meeting.

As far is Morpheus being upset that his ship has been destroyed, I doubt that was quite it. Morpheus has never proven to be self-centered throughout the entire two movies. In the current circumstances they were in, I don’t think he’d stop to soak in pitty of his ship being destroyed. I think his comment reached a bit deeper and had deeper/different meaning.
Terikan

actually, neo sensed the agents. not smith. smith knew neo would be there though, because smith was one of those three agents the last time the prophecy was coming true.

morpheus is the god of dreams in mythology. the god of dreams who had only one dream of his own, the neb. that's how I see it.
CompCode

Why do you say he sensed the agents coming and not Smith? I think he only knew there were agents behind the door when he quickly pieced together the possible connotation of the "gift" he had received. After all, his response to Trinity was "I don't know". I don't remember any time in the past when an agent coming has either cought Neos attention the way it did in this situation, or mystefied him the way it did. It was almost the same reaction as when he turned and realized he "felt" the sentinels coming near the end. Again, I think he felt Smith coming, but didn't know what he was feeling, and am wondering if that has anything to do with a supposed link that I alluded to in my first post.
CompCode

And furthermore, I don't think Morpheus so was engulfed with any dream of his ship as it being his dream. I think he knew he had a purpose, and his purpose in life was to find "the one", and he understood that. Morpheus throughout the Movie has accepted what happens as a result of fate. Even in the elevator, after not receiving the keymaker, he accepted it as being a part of fate, and said it was the only way it could have occurred. I don't think seeing his ship blown up would have resulted in the horrified look on his face merely because it crushed a dream of being a captain on a ship, but again, because of something much deeper. I think the only thing that could make him gasp so is something that throws him off guard, something he might not be prepared to see as being something of fate. All much deeper than his own dreams of desire. All much deeper than the importance of the ship itself.
Terikan

because you see his reaction right after the agents step out of the car. coincidence?

also, later on when he's at the oracle, he's pretty shocked to see smith, it's obvious, same as when he is in the hallway of doors.

I think there is a link of some sort. neo got startled from his sleep when smith came into zion. that was just weird, and suggests a greater matrix theory.
CompCode

You are correct that Neo's reaction came at the same time that someone steped out of the car, but the single person who steps out of the car and knocks on the door is Smith, not the agents. Smith delivered the present. Slightly later the agents broke down the door. Smith was not part of the three who knocked the door down and faught with him. Smith and a clone walked back into the scene after the fight.
Terikan

ok, so neo beat the three agents and then couldn't tell smith was still around? some link eh?

listen, this is my last post because you just won't budge, so it's pointless.

see M1 at the beginning. who gets out of a car? agents. agents drive vehicles to places. smith is not an agent, he probably walked there, who knows. But the agents definitely took a car, and they would have noticed smith if he would have rolled up in his new 'i'm free' bmw 3400.

but he didn't.

It's fine if you don't reply again. But I will go over exactly what is shown in the movie. The scene moves into the meeting, where Neobi starts with "These geotherms...". The conversation continues, then Morpheus, Trinity, and Neo join the meeting. The conversation continues and the camera switches to a black car turning a corner. The door opens, a single set of feet/legs steps out, and we only watch/hear these single set of feet walking toward the door. The scene switches the Neo who twitches his head. Trinity, concerned, asks "What is it"? Neo replys, "I don't know", and moves walks toward the door. A short blurry clip shows a SINGLE person walking towards the door outside, and the scene returns to the conversation in the meeting. The scene then moves to a person pounding on the door outside. The obviouse voice of Smith says "I'm looking for Neo" to the person peeping out of the door. Smith, who claims Neo set him free (and repeats this later at the area Neo talks to the oracle), then gives the person behind the door a "gift". Neo makes it up the steps, asks who was at the door, and one of the two people who were near the door asks Neo how he knew someone was there. After Neo opens the present, Neo announces that the meeting is over and agents are coming. Three agents continue to knock down the door and fight Neo, none of which are Smith. After Neo kicks ass, and sees the bodies of the agents laying on the ground, he looks down the alley and sees no car, where once there was a car, the car Smith had driven to the alley. Neo then directly proceeds to perform a super-man move outa there, and two Smiths return to the scene. That is how it occurred in that order.

You are very wrong. As you can see by my description of events above, that:
1) One person comes out of the car
2) The person who walks from the car and knocks on the door is Smith, claiming he was set free (he says this later, as you know)
3) When the agents bust down the door, Neo kicks their asses, and sees an empty alley (with no car). Neo had not seen the car and had not seen Smith, only the three agents.

If you think I'm wrong in my description of these events, please feel free to watch the Matrix again and prove me wrong somehow.

Do you see how much morpheas belives in fate yet in th first film he asks neo ''Do you believe in fate'' ''no'' then neo says something about not being in control of his life. If morpheas belives so much in fate then fate is no better than the matrix because you are not in control of your own life. This relates back to the choices point about them already being made. So why is morpheas so against the matrix, even he who is freed is not in control of his life.
I thinck that morpheas only dream is to see the end of the war and for the prophecie to come true.

Now, for the rest of the people who understand the movie and what occurred in it, I'd be interested in receiving your opinions.
CompCode

I agree that those are his concerns, netskills, which is why I can't even consider Terikans reply that Mopheus' comment was in regard to him losing his ship, and not something deeper.

And I do find it strange that this moves harps on two things that are seemingly contradictory; fate and choice. Morpheus believes in fate. He believes that prophecies are to be fulfilled in one way or another. Morpheus also believes in choice. He expresses his understanding of choice in M1 when he's talking to Neo, right before he gives Neo the choice between the red and blue pill. He also expresses the idea of choice to Merovingian. But his belief in fate is shown all throughout this movie.
