Why are the agents and all other programs trying to stop Neo?

Why are the agents and all other programs trying to stop Neo when they know it's Neo's destiny to get to the Architect and make the choice?
Reality

The question you should be asking is why haven't they stopped Neo since this has been done five times already.

Neo is the one because he will do what no one before him has done.

Think: He's not much different from them if he succeeds in resetting the mainframe as the Architect claims others before him did.

Remember, Neo is learning to make choices and in the end will choose the thing that matters most - freedom to make choices.
UT

It's happened six times before not five
Reality

Ultimate Trinity, what movie are you looking at?

I think you should go back and watch it again.:o
NeoX

Nice reply Reality...but that's not really an answer to my question, is it...

You're just giving an answer to a different question...

only human

I think it's all about control.
Those who has power wants to keep it.
B-Top

The oracle is a program, and (in her opinion) she is not trying to stop him.
liondale

Could also be a way of filtering the real one from the wannabees. Remember that Morph and his crew had searched for the One a looong time, and even had other candidates before Neo.
This way the Architect wouldn't be bothered with "not-the-ones" because only the One would ever be able to reach him-
Unicity

interesting.
XiaoMing

They were created with the purpose to destroy Zion. Remember Agent Smith's talk with Morpheus in M1? I got the distinc impression that he really didn't feel like existing in a world filled with humans, implying he was created against his will.
NeoX

Nice theory liondale...

But since 6 (including Neo) socalled one's have reached the architect's room it's a wrong theory.

And just before they enter the room 50 Smiths rush in to stop them...but it happened 5 times before - if we have to believe wat the architect says - Thus Smit (who is an agent - program) has to know that he won't be able to stop Neo from going in...so what's the point of trying???

Neo6th

It's not Neo's destiny to get to the Architect!
reloaded_dude

i wonder......maybe cuz neo is trying to kill them.........or maybe cuz they're machines and machines want to control the universe...........dude, watch the 1st movie again
The One V6.0

Just because agents are connected to the Matrix doesn't mean they know what all other programs know.

It's all a need to know basis. The Agents don't know about "The One" and the prophecy to the extent of it repeating as a self-replicating program. That's the ingenius of it. The Agents are nothing more than computer programs and they are built to operate independently. They don't need to be programmed with that information.

And this is the 6th time they have destroyed Zion. 5 before "now" and 6th time being Neo's time.
syphon

i thought the agents are after neo even though its his destiny because agent smith is now a virus and a virus does not obey the program it destroys anything on the computer and neo just so happens to be in the computer.
THEDOUGLEr/BATM

my thoughts are that they are trying to destroy Neo cuz
a) They are jus machines and do wut they r programed
b) They want him to be stopped cuz he is the only being that can stop a agent unless ur a programer
Unamuno

Neo's destiny does not factor into the motives of the Agents.

Just as all programs in the Matrix have a purpose, it is the purpose of the Agents to stop Neo and the rest of the "resistance" from liberating the minds of those who remain under the control of the Matrix.

In all likelihood, the Agents are no more conscious of the Architect and his plans than the unliberated human is conscious of the Matrix itself. The Agents are simply following their programming.

Agent Smith, on the other hand, has become an anomoly, just like Neo and the Oracle. In M1, "Agent" Smith attempted to destroy Neo but instead liberated Neo from the fear of death in the Matrix. Similarly when Neo attempted to destroy Agent Smith he instead liberated Smith from his own programming, allowing Smith to become a self-motivated anomoly.

What motivates Smith now? Power. Ultimately, Smith desires enough power to lord over the Matrix itself. Neo is in his way. Smith is bent on destroying Neo to ensure the continued existence of the Matrix and to increase his own powers, which have already grown by the time he appears again in M2.

Just an opinion...

good god man good theory
The Real One

Everyone knows Neo is "The One". That includes the Agents and the people of Zion. The agents went after Morpheus in part one to prevent him from reaching "The One". Agent Smith in part 1, already parted himself from the rest of the other agents. Thats when he had Morpheus cuffed to the chair and took off his ear piece. Smith is a rebel. In Matrix Re-Loaded, don't forget, the agents are now looking for Neo. Agent Smith is now cloning himself to go up against Neo. Neo is the matrix. The big question to everybody should be, wil Neo be able to really comprehend the true reality of what is going on.
UnbrokenMirror

what if Neo and Smith are working towards a common goal with opposing motivations? Neo wants to destroy the Matrix and free humankind, and smith simply wants to destroy the Matrix and everyone in it out of hatred towards humanity and the programmer who stuck him in the "zoo" apparently against his will.......just food for thought
NeoX

Great reply unamo... Nice theory...you have a follower...;) ;)
flanish

i dont think the agents have messed up before. this "one's" destiny is to choose the door the other "ones" before him did not choose. he doesnt choose the other door b/c he has to do something before the matrix can be restarted, or to destroy the matrix forever. the agents are obviously trying to stop him before he does what he was meant to do -- something big. they arent trying to stop him from getting to the architect, they are trying to stop him from doing whatever he is going to do after he chooses the door he chose.
spier

for my understanding,it's like the never ending story.
bastian read the book because of alll the adventures of atreyu,
so it is all a matter of reason and effect.it all leads to a certain
path, predicted by the oracle and the architect.
Theta

I go with unamuno's theory...it's great.

I'm pretty sure if they didn't make it a challenge for Neo, he wouldn't have tried so hard to get to the Source. I think they know what his reaction will be to certain choices, and they offer him the choice. Obviously, if the evil agents are trying to keep him from succeeding...he must fight against that and succeed.

I suspect Neo actually chose the door he was meant to choose. The architect knew he would make that choice....so it must have been the one he wanted him to make???

A few reactions to the reply by "The Real One":

* The basic modus operandi of an agent is to quell any anomolies sensed within the artificial environment of the Matrix, e.g. the presence of Morpheus and others. Again, they only do what they are programmed to do. They do not have a larger purpose of preventing "The Prophecy" from being fulfilled by "The One".

* The larger mission of the group of agents led by Smith in M1 was to capture Morpheus and obtain the codes for Zion ("I NEED THOSE CODES!"). This objective is made plain with Thomas Anderson's (Neo's) first encounter with the Agents when they plant the tracking device on him. If they had any suspicions that Thomas Anderson was "The One", they clearly would have terminated him on the spot.

* The concepts of "The Prophecy" and "The One" are irrelevant to the m.o. of the Agents. These concepts are only known to the outside resistance, and of course The Architect. They are the equivalent of legend or folklore to those trying to destroy the Matrix. Even then, as the Colonel tells Morpheus, "not everyone believes in The Prophecy."

* Smith's actions cannot be summarized with a pithy comment like "Smith is a rebel." Throughout all of M1, Smith follows his programming as an Agent in trying to capture Morpheus and the codes to Zion. There are some clues, however, that he is different from some of the other Agents. First of all, Smith takes the lead in all interrogations and confrontations between the Agents and the resistance. He clearly has higher rank. Second, his distaste for his own role in the Matrix is evidenced in his conversation with Morpheus ("I hate this place...this reality... It's the smell...I need to get out. I need to be free. You must give me the codes to Zion. Then I won't be needed."). Like the fallen angel Lucifer (yes, more religious analogy), Agent Smith aspires to have more power than that which has been given him. When Neo frees Smith of his physical form at the end of M1, his evil spirit lives on, free of the constraints of his former programming as an agent. Smith is not merely a rebel. He is, like Neo, a growing anomoly. But while Neo seeks to free the minds held captive by The Matrix and thereby destroy it, Smith seeks to become the all-powerful ruler within The Matrix. To do this, he must first destroy Neo.

Again, just an opinion...
sourceX

The agents are trying to stop neo because if he reaches the source, then he will be able to delete the agent program from the mainframe, hence deleting all agents from the matrix. I also think Neo is an upgrade of the Smith program and smith is trying to stop neo to avoid deletion. In M1 Smith and neo duke it out the entire movie and smith finally kills neo. However, by neo coming back and killing smith it shows that neo is superior to smith and the smith is obsolete. Now that this is the case, smith faces deletion from the mainframe by whoever is operating it. In M2 the oracle tells neo that when a program becomes outdated or obsolete, they either hide in the matrix or try and go back to the source. Smith wants to get to the source so he can rewrite himself to be better than neo, he is getting closer to this goal as he takes Banes body before he goes back into the real world. Bane is the only survivior from the sentinels destruction of the line of defense that zion puts up to slow the machines. So one has to wonder what is gonna go down as soon as he and neo wake up next to each other. Smith is slowly upgrading himself(the ability to make any other person a smith) so he can defeat neo and preserve his existence.
Freddy Krueger

i think that this can be a interesting tread. i'll bring it up again :)
AlmightyOne

exactly they dont wont neo to succed they want zion to fall.
Freddy Krueger

well i think that the agents try to stop neo because that is there purpose. to capture or kill humans that are illigal hacking into the matrix

for the other programs, they just do what there orderd to do.
