Bad frame rate unless sound disabled

Anyone,

I'm trying to run the game on PC, but the frame rate is really poor. It shouldn't be. I'm running a 1.6Ghz Athlon with 768 meg of RAM on GeForce4 128 and Soundblaster Audigy on WINXP. Anyhow, when I run the game in safe mode, it runs great but no sound. I can't figure it out, and I've downloaded ALL new drivers, messed with the tweaks, reinstalled DirectX, etc, etc. Does anyone have any good suggestions?

You're running it in Windows safemode? Doesn't that kill all drivers to everything except bare minimum and take video to VGA mode? I would think that is why you have no sound, but I would guess your video would be junk too

No, I'm running it in the game's safe mode. You know, in the menu, you can actually select safe mode in the game's menu.

I should qualify my last post. Safe mode is in the game's startup screen once you've downloaded the v1.52 patch and installed it.
