It seems Google is moving into the Software field and of course Microsoft is watching. I really think Google could be quite the competitor with ole Microsoft. They already have the public exposure, think about it anyone that has a computer and internet knows what google is.
If nothing else this will be great competition, and in free market nothing but good can be produced when two giants are fighting for your money. :)
I think Microsoft needs to calm down. They spent a long time building their empire, & Google is starting to do the same. This probably means that both companies will be sending a lot of free stuff our way. Besides, Bill Gates is one of the richest guys in the whole friggin world. He's a genius; he'll think of something brilliant. Or he'll pay someone to.
Bill Gates is a lucky moron, nothing more. More power to Google. I'm sick of hearing about Microsoft. Somebody should just take it out back and shoot it.
I disagree, Bill Gates was a well timed, lucky moron. But yeah, bring on Google, lets see what they can make of this one man market.
As soon as Google releases an OS let me know. Till then, who cares.
Hmmm. I am fascinated with Google. The "low CPU usage"-formula works and I look towards all future ventures with great anticipation. A Google Messenger would invest in a somewhat saturated market, but seeing as Microsofts messenger drains my CPU almost as much as KaZaA, I wouldn't mind some GMail integrated service, with Google's famed simplicity :).
Mr U
This might be interesting. Google has fared pretty well in venturing out so far. If they manage to surpass Microsoft, more power to them.
Just Wait For When Google Release A "z-box" Or A "google_station" Or Possibly A Hand Held"game-google", Just A Thought
It'll be a long while before they hit the gaming industry... I'm betting they'll stick to the professional side (and some home use, but no games) of the computer software (and operating systems) industry.
Lets hope they never go down that road, renegade. I still think it was a vast mistake for microsoft to make xbox. Besides Halo, nothing good has come from that system.
@HU: Thats exactly why I think Google could be the ones to seriously challenge Microsofts hold on the market. Because if you look back they're way of defeating/weakening opponents was to make a simpler and more easy to use version(not ever a better way mind you). This time Google has beaten them to the punch, Google from the start makes its applications as simple as possible with maximum efficiency.
whoa!!!hold the phone dude,i LOVE the xbox but your right about halo
Hey did anyone see the new google toolbar they're offering? It's pretty sweet, it's got language translators, spell check, pop-up blockers & a buncha other crap, all for free! They're just ropin everyone in before they go for the big-time software. Just go HERE (http://www.google.com/support/toolbar/bin/static.py?page=features.html) to check it out.
Microsoft can crush google (and will) by integrating its new search technologies (now more frequently updated, less spam filled, and better than google) into the new version of Windows.
Google search has been slipping after the last cashout. Many old employees are now millionares and the initial spark is gone.
When does Longhorn come out?
Who cares!?
Longhorn? Long-waste-of-time...
(sorry if you care, but I couldn't resist)
Microsoft has it's place. It currently has a tight grip on the market, but people will realize that there are better (and cheaper) solutions out there.
Actually, as much as I dislike Micro$oft I would have to say that there are very few comparable products on the market. For the smaller products like browsers and media players yes, but not really for the bigger stuff. Nothing comes to mind that will match the Office package or the OS. Yes its bloatware and could be cheaper, but there just isnt anything as all-inclusive for a PC. And dont even mention the open source programs. Yes they are powerful and very nice for about 20% of the computer using population, but they simply cant compare to what Windows products can offer.
What!?
I know you said not to mention open source, but there are a *lot* of open source software that is very powerful and as functional or more so, then microsoft. Try Open Office instead of Office, or others -- not sure if there are other Office look-a-likes that run on win(D'oh)s, but I am sure there are (google: open source office). Linux is a *very* powerful OS and, in my opinion (and many others), a better OS then windows. Again, windows has its place, but to say that there isn't anything that is as all-inclusive is just not true.
I just cleansed myself of windows at home and have not needed any microsoft products. And if I did, I can use Wine that I can use to run windows programs with. Currently on my computer there is not a single piece of software that I had to pay for, and none of it was pirated. If you like to try out Linux there are many Live CD version that you can try out without having to install it, it simply runs off the CD. Here is a link: http://www.linuxhq.com/dist.html
Sorry if this sound so emotional, but to dismiss open source and Linux is to dismiss a lot of good quality software, OSs, and tools.
At work I use windows, and every day that I use it now that I have Linux it seems more and more limiting.
I dont dismiss it. I run BSD on one of my home machines. But the simple fact is that Open Source doesnt match up at this point in time. If I could do everything that I want to do on my BSD machine then I wouldnt need a Windows machine, its that simple.
What do you need on your windows machine that you can't run on BSD? I don't know much about BSD. Can you run something simular to Wine?
Ha, I love how people make themselves out to be embarking on some spiritual journey of enlightenment as they purge themselves of Microsoft products.
Not spiritual journey but a crusade for all that is pure and good in this world. Microsoft is evil. It must be stopped.
Of course! Quick! Avert the eyes of the women and children--they're vulnerable to the evil emitting from these PCs! Get me the Pope on the line... I heard Bill Gates bought... er... stole! Stole the Holy Grail!
It's not that we are making it seem that we are "embarking on some spiritual journey of enlightenment", but when you finially make that decision (usually it not something done on a whim) you feel very euphoric that you made the right decision. It is a very librating feeling.
PS - to a geek this sorta is like a "spiritual journey of enlightenment"!
