This was an email that I was forwarded, and I thought it was interesting. Don't know if I'm going to observe it or not, but I don't usually spend money on Thursdays anyway, and I thought people might want to know if they didn't already.
Not One Damn Dime Day
Since our religious leaders will not speak out against the war in
Iraq, since our political leaders don't have the moral courage to
oppose it, Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is "Not One
Damn Dime Day" in America.
On "Not One Damn Dime Day," those who oppose what is happening in
our name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all
forms of consumer spending.
During "Not One Damn Dime Day" please don't spend money.
Not one damn dime for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or
for impulse purchases.
Not one damn dime for anything for 24 hours.
On "Not One Damn Dime Day," please boycott Walmart, KMart and
Target. Please don't go to the mall or the local convenience store.
Please don't buy any fast food (or any groceries at all for that
matter).
For 24 hours, please do what you can to shut the retail economy
down. The object is simple. Remind the people in power that the war in
Iraq is immoral and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it
and that it is their responsibility to stop it.
"Not One Damn Dime Day" is to remind them, too, that they work for ! ;
the people of the United States of America, not for the international
corporations and K Street lobbyists who represent the corporations and
funnel cash into American politics.
"Not One Damn Dime Day" is about supporting the troops. The
politicians put the troops in harm's way. Now 1,200 brave young
Americans and (some estimate) 100,000 Iraqis have died. The
politicians owe our troops a plan -- a way to come home.
There's no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or
right wing agenda to rant about. On "Not One Damn Dime Day" you take
action by doing nothing. You open your mouth by keeping your wallet
closed. For 24 hours, nothing gets spent, not one damn dime, to remind
our religious leaders and our politicians of their
moral responsibility to end the war in Iraq and give America back to
the people.
You know, if they're really serious about this, they must not use the water, the electricity, nothing, absolutely nothing. The water and electricity bills go to the politicians too, right?
This is absurd. I spent seven months fighting in Iraq and would be more than happy to go back. Civilians need to shut the fuck up.
Wouldn't people just spend even more the previous day?
That's fucking ridiculous. You can't shut the economy down for a day. That's a physical improbability. Especially since half the Americans believe in Bush and in the war in Iraq. They sent out that email in vain.
I think perhaps the media sends the wrong messages with the war in Iraq. Since they don't report on anything good, they send the message that there is nothing good happening when in fact there is. I have a brother in the military and he and all of his friends are happy to be over there helping. But that's just one point of view I guess.
And yeah, you can't shut down the economy. That's pretty much impossible to do completely. You can slow it down (look what 9/11 did) but not stop it enough for anyone to do anything
Fuck that. The 20th is my b-day. If anything, I'll be overindulging my participation in the economy that day.
This is absurd. I spent seven months fighting in Iraq and would be more than happy to go back. Civilians need to shut the fuck up.
You can shut up if you want to, but some people don't agree with you. I know, shocking! A teacher at my school is in the National Guard reserve and was sent to Iraq. He had a wife and two kids who had to grow up without him. Everyone was worried sick about him while he was gone and I can tell you if someone gave him the choice to go back or stay, he would stay.
I agree this won't shut the entire economy down, but if it's actually succesful, it could put a dent in it. This is the same question that is asked every time a protest happens. It's the priciple of it. Sure, Bush won't call of the war because some stupid kids are skipping school in Davis. Although if everyone in America skipped school for a day, the message might get through. Same with this. If five people don't go shopping, so what? If a million people or more don't go shopping, that could do something.
Personally, I won't really make a diffrence, but I will do my part. I believe this war was a mistake and chances are if you disagree I won't be able to change your mind. Just remember to look back on this day when your kid comes to you with his/her text book asking about the worst president in history.
Everyone was worried sick about him while he was gone and I can tell you if someone gave him the choice to go back or stay, he would stay.
Then he should not have joined the guard. If you are not willing to get deployed and fight and leave your family, DONT JOIN THE ARMED SERVICES. Wow, amazing how easy that is.
Just remember to look back on this day when your kid comes to you with his/her text book asking about the worst president in history.
(This is old, so are some of the stats.)
FDR led us into World War II.
Germany never attacked us: Japan did.
From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.
Truman finished that war and started one in Korea.
North Korea never attacked us.
From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,333 per year.
John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962.
Vietnam never attacked us.
Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire.
From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost, an average of 5,800 per year.
Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent.
Bosnia never attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by the Sudan and did nothing.
Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.
Over 2,900 lives lost on 9/11.
In the two years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran and North Korea without firing a shot, captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.
We lost 600 soldiers, an average of 300 a year.
Bush did all this abroad while not allowing another terrorist attack at home
It took less time to take Iraq, than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51 day operation.
We've been looking for evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.
It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard, than it took Teddy Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick.
Ok, here's a question. Actually, 2.
1. What evidence is there that Osama was the one behind 9/11?
2. How did the hunt for Osama become the hunt for Saddam?
Oh by the way, since Pearl Harbour, conclusive proof has shown that FDR knew about the attack before it happened. He wanted America in WW2 to rejuvinate America's flagging economy. There could be something similar going on here...
There could be something similar going on here...
Except that the economy was doing rather well before the attack and only faltered after. It is unlikely that they would have welcomed the attack to get into a war for economic gain. Other reasons perhaps, but not the economy.
Then he should not have joined the guard. If you are not willing to get deployed and fight and leave your family, DONT JOIN THE ARMED SERVICES. Wow, amazing how easy that is.
Maybe you forgot something. The National Guard is a GUARD. That means they stay home defending us. Not go overseas to fight a false war.
People make their choices daily, and just because they have to live with them or die for them DOES NOT make them the Presiden'ts fault.
Of course it's not his fault that they joined the war. The war, however, is his fault.
I personally think Bush is a moron, but he's my President, and I support him
If I could, I would smack you upside the head. Don't support him just because he's in power. If you think he's a moron and wrong, say something about it. Don't support him. Vote against him (too late). But don't sit back and support him for no reason other than the Supreme Court deciding he would make a good president. Sometimes the people are smarter than the polititians.
i agree with how easy it is to not do military service, and there not bears... FUCKEN KOALAS ARENT BEARS!!!! HOW HARD IS IT FOR DUMBSHIT AMERICANS TO REALIZE!!!! THERE FUCKEN MAMMALS!!!!!! -breaks down and cries-
Actually they're marsupials.
And please relax a little, I'm not sure if you were joking or not, but if you weren't, please refrain from flaming.
i agree with how easy it is to not do military service, and there not bears... FUCKEN KOALAS ARENT BEARS!!!! HOW HARD IS IT FOR DUMBSHIT AMERICANS TO REALIZE!!!! THERE FUCKEN MAMMALS!!!!!! -breaks down and cries-
By that logic, however false, koalas could be bears, because bears are also mammals. But see, it's name is the koala bear, an English name. Therefore, it is false to begin with, as the koala's true name is its latin 'genus species' name.
But, with all things, Eon is right. It's a marsupial. And platypuses are the only mammals that lay eggs. Go figure.
Which would be called a monotreme, but beside the point
If you want to get REALLY scientific about it, koalas belong in a category called 'house pets'
Good luck with that mate, keep clear of the claws ok. Are they classed alongside kangaroos, cause we have so many of those in our backyards.
It's a good thing California has Eucalyptus trees.
That means they stay home defending us. Not go overseas to fight a false war.
Ever since the end of Nam the guard has been called upon to support troop operations around the world. It has been common policy to send in the guard and reserve forces for a rather long time. Anybody who doesnt know their history enough to realize this and enlists in either unit thinking it will be an easy paycheck is a fool
Actually, that went out a few years ago, it's now incorrect, the plural of platypus is platypus, kinda like sheep or fish.
I might think our current Prime Minister is an innocuous little short ass, however I am proud of what he has acheived in the past 4 terms in office. If it were some of our other past leaders that had to make the same decisions he has over the past 4 terms, I would be hanging my head in shame. With the exeption of some, who proved that they lead us through the hardest of times while supporting all they could offer at home and abroad. Even now, we can see some light to the tense relations we have had over the last few decades with Indonesia, and not only do I realise it was partly due to everyday Australians, giving whatever they could to our neighbors, but our Prime Minister sending our armed forces, relief and care packages (which has been record breaking), sending our elite ER doctors and specialists, ER theatre nurses, and giving a billion to help rebuild. Also organising and personally overseeing kit homes being built to give immediate shelter for the many homeless. We also have our own version of home guards over there, and they realise and gladly accept the fact they are sent wherever they are needed.
"Like you Americans, we Australians like to lead a life of our own … but this war is not about the politics of Europe but the politics of the human race."
And no koala is going anywhere near me. They may fart eucalyptus leaves, but they sractch and scream like a scrub.
eon is right... platypus is its own plural. And marsupial was the word i was originally looking for, but because i am a stoner i deleted the file on indigenous australian creatures. Euclaypts were here first... california stole them... damn yanks.. not that ive got anything against them, its not like tree theft is a big crime.
Oh, don't even go on about stealing things. Australians ain't got nothing on us "yanks".
Why does this seem like another useless protest action that gets hardly any attention. pah I have yet to see any protest that actually solves anything. This one wont be any different as an economical shutdown is impossible for one day. In such case i'll make sure to spend an extra amounton the 20th.
1. What evidence is there that Osama was the one behind 9/11?
2. How did the hunt for Osama become the hunt for Saddam?
1. The terrorists that hijacked the planes were Al-Queda personell, Osama is the leader of this terrorists group. Looks like a conection to me.
2. The hunt for Osama did not turn into a hunt for Saddam. Even though the events of 9/11 and the WMD inspectors happened in quite close junction people dont realise they had almost nothing in corelation.
Well met. Alot of the people bitching about the war have never seen a battlefield, yet feel that they need to be the voicebox for the families of armed forces personnel. I find it ironic that with all the hoopla, many of those in the armed forces and have served in Iraq did indeed vote for Bush. They saw what the rest of us didn't see and faced dangers that we only hear about, and they thought it important enough to keep Bush in office.
Coming from a military family it was quite obvious Kerry would have only screwed things up in Iraq(more than they already are that is). Which is why I find it funny when someone says how bad Iraq is going but dont see the alternative.
FDR led us into World War II.
Germany never attacked us: Japan did.
From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.
FDR was a great pres, Japan and Germany were allied for a time there. Nazi Germany wanted all of Europe and may have not stopped there. Defeating Germany not just helped the region but the entire world of an extremely dangerous power. Not to mention ridding Hitler who had with the holocost has probaly commited the greatest crime against humanity ever.
Truman finished that war and started one in Korea.
North Korea never attacked us.
From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,333 per year.
The U.S didnt "start" the war in Korea, the USSR was fighting against Japan in northern Korea. Roughly a week later the U.S occupied the south in fear that the USSR would try to take the entire penninsula. When the south proclaimed itself 'The Republic of Korea' and the north 'The people's Republic of China' disputes started over the border. The U.S by 1948 had even removed all of its combat troops. Only when the North started the invasion and virtually completely crushed the south resistance did the U.S get militarily involved.
We lost 600 soldiers, an average of 300 a year.
We actually have lost 1300 soldiers, so raise that to about 650 a year.
When was the last war that the U.S "started" besides Iraq, umm the Civil War.
