AGP help

NMN

Okie Doke, I need some help about specifications for AGP cards. I am in the market for a new video card, larger in memory, and AGP, rather than my PCI vid card I have now.

My mainboard is about a year or so old, and it has a AGP 4x slot, which I'm gathering from half-researching is AGP 2.0.

My question is, would an AGP 8x card work on that slot? I would like to know, because I don't want to spend $100+ on something that won't work with my current set-up.

I am looking in the ner future to upgrade my processor and mainboard, but for now, the vid card is just going to be changed.

Help please?

Well, I already bought an 8x AGP card that said it was compatible with 4x, so I'm good.

Thanks for all the help though guys, I appreciate it. Don't all jump on the thanks at once, though, you crazy forum mongrels.

Lol...sorry I got here late.
Yeah, AGP 8X can work on 4X, but the drop in efficiency is ugly. Do yourself a favour and get an 8X capable comp-trust me on it. You're not doing even the best card out there justice if you end up effectively halving its output-the 4X drop lowers its performance more than anything out there that I can think of.
One other thing...for the time being at least, the relatively new PCI Express technology isn't worth the effort. Sure, performance is a little higher, but its definitely not worth the whole upgrade and higher prices. Not many motherboards or programs know how to use it too. The only solid advantage it might have is the ability to mount 2 PCI/E cards on the same motherboard: effectively quantity over quality, a trend processors are also now beginning to follow. But hey; that's assuming you're rich and dumb enough to buy two of the things, plus the motherboard that can support them. ;)

Thanks for the try, Mac! But you read my mind, because I was thinking about getting a new motherboard/CPU after the first of the year, and so my vid card won't be suffereing for too much longer.

I'm not rich, but I don't have many expenses.
