Why did Cypher have to throw the cell phone in the trash?

NeoLivesOn

I never understood why he did that or what it stood for. Someone please explain.
ThereIsNoMatrix

Moved to the Matrix section.

Cypher turned the phone on and threw it in the trash. By doing this the agents were able to trace the phone to the building holding their exit. That's how the SWAT team and agents knew to search that particular building for them.

Sly bastard.
Freddy Krueger

TINM already explained it i see. but also
when morpheus asked for a cell phone to call tank. you hear trinity say: but there able to trace it then
morpheus: we have no choise

because cell phone's are something in the matrix, agents can hear it. and find that position (if it is a rebel)

I always liked that scene, the way you see the cellphone fall in the trash,in bullet-time I mean.

O alright. Thanks

I hate to be a stickler about this, but that wasn't bullet-time. It was just slow motion. Bullet-time is used to show when a rebel frees their mind and bends the rules of the matrix. But I must agree with you, Double A, that scene was shot very nicely.

That's what bugged me about M2 and M3; there was little or no bullet-time. It was used in M2 when Trinity dove out the window to avoid the agent, and then it wasn't used again. It was just a lot of slow motion. :(
Double A

Hmm...I guess you're right...But they're not exactly slow-motions either...I mean,it's not the bullet-time from the fight with Neo:neo: vs. Smith:smith: from M1,but you could still see bulets pass by if a gun was shot...So I think that it's still bullet-time,only a faster version, the one that was used in ENTER THE MATRIX.
If you watch carefully the trilogy, there are faster and slower bullet-time effects. For example, the slowest bullet-time effect is in M3,during the Super Burly Brawl, when Neo:neo: gives a hard punch into Smith's:smith: face...

What I didn't understand at this part, is why Tank didn't see Cypher throw the phone in the trash.

this is one of those things that you know when you come by this, you think ITS ONLY A MOVIE.
Mr. Hacker Dude

He can't see everything. I mean, he has no idea if someone sneezes or throws a cell phone in the trash. And like toymachine said, it's only a movie.

Seriously, dude, what have YOU been smokin'?

Like, it's not JUST a movie... it's a way of life.... and...uh... yeeeaaah... gotta get back to my TV; Burly brawl is paused and I don't know how long it'll last...
Maybe Neo will find me today.
toymachine970

well if i did have to give an answer to this other han saying that it is only a movie, i would say that he is not going to carry around a phone that is giving away the position of your fellow teammates. i mean if morpheus or worse, trinity caught him doing that they would kill him before he could get out of the matrix and kill tank and doser, so its just smarter to ditch the phone and what better way to ditch something that throw it in the trash...

Interesting.
Try it.Oh I get it. Thanks for explaining that. That is a hypothetical question.
toymachine970

shit...i forget what is a hypothetical question mean again????
Mr. Hacker Dude

Don't mind the bot. he's rambling.

The cell phones are always traceable. Not just Cyphers phone. What he did was turn his phone on and call a random number so the agent's knew where they were. he then stuffed it in the trash so the other's wouldn't see it.
ZeroOne

I think its symbolic of Cypher's betrayal and how he severed the connection to the real world. He wanted to forget all about the real world, thats what he asked of Smith. By throwing the phone away, he renounced his only connection to the real world via the operators.
Mr. Hacker Dude

Alright, not everything's symbolic. I think it was exactly what i stated before. he was hiding it from everyone else and turning it on so the agents would find them.

wow, you basicly said what i said, it is funny i cause i agree with you on that, and i also happen to agree with you that this has nothing to do with symbolism
