Lucid Dreaming - Is it in you?

ThereIsNoMatrix

You spend nearly 1/3-1/2 of your life sleeping. Shouldn't you make something constructive out of all this time?

Some of you may be familiar with the term "lucid dreaming" but for those of you who are not, let me explain a little. Lucid Dreaming is also known as "Concious Dreaming." From this name, you can discern that it involves being actively aware that you are dreaming. One who has mastered lucid dreaming can do anything he or she wishes - the only limit is literally your imagination. Those who have lucid dreams realize that they are dreaming, and from there are able to control their dreams. They can fly like Neo, stop bullets in mid-air, become monarch of the world and have billions of people hail them - and it all seems utterly realistic, since it is a dream. Ironically, it is similar to the concept of the Matrix.

Some people become lucid naturally. For others, it takes some work. The first step is to become good at recalling your dreams (after all, you might be having lucid dreams but you just can't remember them). There are then several different techniques to help yourself question if your dreaming or not when you sleep. Such things as asking yourself if your dreaming whenever you look at your watch throughout the day may help you to ask that same question when you look at your watch in your dreams.

I have been trying to become lucid on and off for the past couple years. Recently I've started it back up, and I'm just wondering: Has anyone here had any lucid dreams, or are trying to become lucid?

I've done that more than a few times in my dreams:) Almost every dream I have is Lucid, It's pretty cool. I can't really remember one where I wasn't lucid, and I usually remember my dreams very well.

come to think of it i have had more then one lucid dream because i made myself do impossible stuff in a few of my dreams and i knew i was making my self do them. though it is still hard to do it all the time.

I've done it a few times, most notably when I dreamt I was on a date with my crush and I was just about to "move in" when the alarm bell rang. Lucid dreams for tend to be very vivid and stay in my mind for quite a while.
ThereIsNoMatrix

That's cool that you guys had lucid dreams. Did it just come naturally, or were you trying to become lucid?
Neo is The One

It's always come naturally to me. It's almost everynight, too, so it's pretty cool.

Yes whenever I dream they are Lucid, its quite fun. :) I remember the first Lucid dream I had was when I was about 9 and I was trying to jump over this gorge, and about halfway across I had to flap my arms. It actually got kinda hard and I stopped and just fell. lol

It was a few years before I had another Lucid dream. Its sometimes funny because I can freak myself out, by making things appear or change and Im suprised at how "real" they become.

Maybe it was an uncoincess effort or something of trying to be in control, but I was never "trying" to become Lucid but I think It kinda just came naturally.

well most of the time i had to try but every once in a while it would come naturally.
Raj Against The Machine

so how does one 'lucid dream'. i want to try it out.
Kara

I've had one or two, but I can't do it at will. Like I can't just say I'm gonna have a lucid dream tonight. I would like to learn how though.

For some people it takes a long time to become lucid, for others it comes naturally (like for some of you guys). There's several steps you can take to try to become lucid... First you gotta become good at remembering your dreams. Then there's things such as dream signs that you can practice in order to make yourself question if you're dreaming while you're dreaming. The link below can tell ya everything you want to know about lucid dreaming and how to become lucid.

wow; I'd never heard of all this before- it's really interesting. I think I may start trying :D

The few dreams I remember, the majority are ones where I'm aware that I'm dreaming. Sometimes I decide where the "storyline" will go, and others I sit back and watch from a third-person perspective.

Sadly, there are very few dreams I have that I remember. I'll start paying more attention, though :D Thanks, TINM!
ThereIsNoMatrix

Good luck, PP :D. Hopefully it'll come easier to you than it does to me... Still no luck :(

I have had lucid dreams before, and have often had the awareness that it was but a dream. Can't say I dreamed of ruling the world though. Mostly it just involved me watching someone burn in a building. Nasty that.

wouldn't it be wierd (and scarey) if you realised that you were dreaming but you couldn't get out of your dream what would you be able to do? maybe make a computer appear and learn how to lucid dream and get yourself out? one last question if you wer lucid dreaming could you fool your mid to think that you are eating and drinking?

Thanks. Strange, considering it's actually true. I have been having that same dream for a looong time. A person on the second floor of a burning building, the landscape a barren waistland, the sky red.

Anyone can interpret that for me, lol?

Mr U
Raj Against The Machine

in a way neo and the potentials were lucid dreaming

I have had dreams where I know I'm dreaming but then that always seems to wake me up!

And Ou Be, What the hell was that like??!?!? Astral Travel is having an outer body experience.

First off I realised I was lying in my bed, but I wasn't awake...next thing I know I'm shooting up through the roof of my apartment whilst still in a prone position...I remember thinking 'WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!?!?'...and that's pretty much when it stopped. I thought I was losing my mind, so I didn't tell anyone about it...then I mentioned it to a friend at work and he said "Ohhh...that's 'astral travelling'" and went one to tell me a bit about it...hasn't happened since, but it was pretty freaky-deaky, if you get my speaky...

Word.

Hmmm....Truth should see this!
Now, me....I'm afraid I have a much different view on lucid dreams. Frankly I've only had a handful of lucid dreams my whole life...and more frankly those dreams horrified me. It was watching my ego run unrestrained; the dream becoming boring when nothing could surprise me and scary when I realised what my inner desires were. The one I could remember the most was when I was very young, engaged in a battle with many armoured men with a katana (Truly; I kid you not!). The thing was; these men were all unmoving, of no threat to me. Yet I was the hero; and I cut them all down like so much hay. I remember the dream happening at a point of my life when my sense of self-importance was non-existent: the drunk feeling of power was intoxicating and later, horrifying.
I've also, for the majority of my life, had blank dreams: nothing at all, just a deep sense of relaxation. I've come to appreciate dreams, but I've also come to think of them as signs that either some higher power or your subconsciouness has to hint to you. None of that with lucid dreams.
......and besides; what's the point of seeing a story unfold and taking part in one with as much conscious participation as you do in real life? It's like not sleeping at all!
CliveTheBum

I don't think I had a Lucid Dream but whatever it was.. It was very shocking... It wasn't pleasant... (I got a black eye out of it).. I'll explain. It wasn't a dream, I must've closed my eyes for about 7 seconds and then opened them again and the first thing I saw when I opened them was a fuck off huge boulder heading straight towards me... I was awake as well.. It was a faint image that I could see, I couldn't turn away from it and because it was constantly in my sight..... Then I decided to smack myself in the eye, hoping I would wake up and then it would go... Nope.. Not a chance in hell.. (thats how I got the black eye)... So I decided to crawl towards it and as soon as I got about 2 foot away from it, it dissapeared... Very strange. Does anyone know what they call this type of thing? I call it a wake-up call (serves its purpose.. It wakes you up!.. lol)

I was 11 years old when it happened. It's not happened since... But I've always wondered whether other people experienced anything like it..... Anyone? Or was I just going mad?... lol
HomoUniversalis

Darn, why don't I get those kind of dreams. That person just keeps burning, and you are chopping up people :D. Well as a fond believer in the non-existence of the supernatural, I do not believe in astral travel, apart from the fact that it is a state that can be induced by a large amount of neuro-transmitters running amock, or by a bit too much of acid.

More amusing, however, is the fact that the CIA had experiments with 'astral travelers' who focused on the red square, telling the CIA what they saw.
